Para-Badminton Star Manasi Joshi Clarifies Controversial Funding Remarks
Following a wave of criticism, former World No.1 para-badminton player Manasi Joshi has addressed her recent comments regarding funding for para sports. In a bid too quell the backlash, she took to social media to clarify her intentions and urge critics to understand her viewpoint.
The controversy erupted after Joshi’s tweet suggesting a reallocation of funds from cricket to para sports, sparking a heated debate among fans. While she acknowledged the government’s support for athletes, she emphasized her appeal was directed towards brands, not government bodies.
Joshi’s initial statement, posted on January 3rd, coincided with the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia, where the Indian cricket team was trailing 2-1. Her tweet, which read “Please allocate some of cricket’s funding to para sports. We deliver better results,” was perceived by many as a direct critique of cricket’s dominance in funding and a boast about the achievements of para-athletes.
This ignited a firestorm of reactions, with cricket enthusiasts defending the sport’s financial independence and pointing out that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) operates independently of government funding.
one user commented, “Cricket is self-funded, manasi. Get your facts right. Don’t try to seek unnecessary attention, focus on your game. Wishing you all the best!”
Others highlighted the significant strides made by para-sports in recent years, citing the impressive medal haul at the Paralympics as evidence of their dedication and success.
The incident underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the allocation of resources in sports. While cricket enjoys immense popularity and financial backing in India, para-sports continue to fight for recognition and adequate funding.
Joshi’s clarification, while aimed at mitigating the backlash, has reignited the conversation about the need for a more equitable distribution of resources in the sporting landscape. As para-sports continue to gain momentum globally, the call for increased investment and support is likely to grow louder.

The recent controversy surrounding Manasi Joshi’s tweet about reallocating funds from cricket to para-sports has sparked a nationwide debate. What are your thoughts on this complex issue?
I understand Manasi’s frustration. Para-athletes often train under challenging conditions, facing a constant struggle for resources and recognition. While cricket undoubtedly enjoys massive popularity and financial backing in india, it’s critically important to remember that para-sports represent a whole other spectrum of talent, dedication, and achievement.
The very existence of this debate highlights a crucial point. Is there genuinely an imbalance in how we prioritize different sports in india?
Absolutely. We need to move beyond viewing sports through a narrow lens of popularity and commercial viability. Para-sports deserve equal prospect, not just in terms of funding but also in media coverage, infrastructure, and public perception.
Some argue that the BCCI, being self-funded, shouldn’t be drawn into this discussion. Your outlook?
While the BCCI operates independently, they can certainly play a role in advocating for a more inclusive sporting ecosystem. Their influence extends beyond the cricketing world.
Imagine if some of the BCCI’s marketing expertise and global connections were used to promote para-sports? It would be a game-changer.
You’ve consistently been a voice for change. What concrete steps can we take, as a nation, to truly bridge this funding gap and give para-athletes the platform they deserve?
Firstly, we need government policies that mandate a percentage of sports budgets be allocated to para-sports. Secondly, encouraging corporate sponsorships specifically tailored to support para-athletes can make a huge difference. showcasing the extraordinary stories of our para-athletes through compelling media coverage will resonate with audiences and inspire a generation.
Manny believe empowering grassroots programs for disabled athletes is crucial. Do you agree?

Let’s build a sporting landscape where every athlete, nonetheless of their abilities, has the resources and opportunities to achieve their dreams.
