Samuel Mendoza, the nation’s top goalkeeper adn a two-time Paralympic champion following his victory at Paris 2024, was unable to attend the ceremony. His coach, sandra Loza, accepted the award on his behalf.
Salvador Hernández, a celebrated paralympic athlete, secured fifth place in the 100-meter event at Paris 2024. Even though he missed out on his ninth Paralympic medal, Hernández remains a legend in Michoacán sports history. His achievements include gold medals in the 200 and 400 meters at Sydney 2000 and the 100 meters at Athens 2004. He also earned silver medals in the 100 meters at Sydney 2000, the 200 meters at athens 2004, and the 100 meters at London 2012. Additionally, he claimed bronze in the 200 meters at London 2012 and the 100 meters at Rio de janeiro 2016, all in the T52 category.
“Qualifying for Paris 2024 was incredibly challenging after missing Tokyo 2020,” hernández shared. “Rebuilding my performance post-pandemic was tough, especially since state support for high-performance athletes was cut during Governor Silvano aureoles’ management and continued under the current government. I’m deeply grateful to the Michoacán coaches for this recognition.” The seasoned athlete, known for his resilience, aims to continue competing at the highest level and achieve further milestones this year.
