Leveling the Field: An Interview with Marta Vieira da Silva on the UEFA-CONMEBOL Women’s Leadership program
The football world is abuzz with anticipation for the launch of the UEFA-CONMEBOL Women’s Leadership Program (WFLP). This groundbreaking initiative, kicking off in Rio de Janeiro in March 2025, seeks to empower a new wave of female leaders in the sport. To delve deeper into the program’s impact, I sat down with the legendary Marta Vieira da Silva, six-time FIFA world Player of the year and a vocal advocate for women’s football.
Welcome, Marta. It’s an honor to have you. The WFLP is a important step towards greater gender equality in football leadership. What are yoru thoughts on this initiative?
Marta: “Thank you for having me. This program is truly inspiring. For so long, women have been underrepresented in decision-making roles within football. The WFLP recognizes that talent and leadership exist throughout the sport, regardless of gender. It’s about creating opportunities for women to step up and shape the future of the beautiful game.”
The program is open to women involved in any sector of football administration, not just those focused on women’s football. Why is this crucial?
Marta: “It’s crucial to have a holistic approach. Women involved in marketing, finance, coaching, refereeing, all bring valuable perspectives. by including women from diverse backgrounds, the WFLP ensures that leadership reflects the multifaceted nature of football itself.”
the program is delivered by renowned academics from IMD Business School, known for its world-class leadership training. How will this rigorous academic element benefit participants?
Marta: “The WFLP isn’t just about passion for football; it’s about equipping women with the strategic and leadership skills needed to thrive in challenging environments. IMD’s expertise will provide participants with the tools and knowledge to excel, whether they aspire to be CEOs,club presidents,or international federation leaders.”
Some argue that such programs are unnecessary, suggesting that women should simply compete for leadership positions on equal footing with men. What woudl you say to those critics?
Marta: “While I believe in meritocracy, we must acknowledge that the playing field isn’t level. Decades of systemic bias have created barriers for women in leadership. The WFLP doesn’t seek to hand out favors, but rather to provide targeted support and resources that empower women to overcome those barriers. Think of it as a springboard, helping talented individuals reach their full potential.”
What message would you give to aspiring female leaders who are considering applying to the WFLP?
Marta: “don’t hesitate. This is your prospect to join a powerful network of driven women who are passionate about football. Seize this chance to learn, grow, and become the changemakers our sport needs.”
