Cruzeiro Withdraws from Valentín Gómez Pursuit Amidst Contractual Disputes
Argentine defender Valentín Gómez will remain with Vélez Sarsfield for the foreseeable future,as Cruzeiro has officially pulled out of negotiations for the 21-year-old talent. Initially reported by journalist Samuel Venâncio and confirmed by ESPN, the deal, which had seemingly been agreed upon by both clubs, fell apart due to Vélez’s inconsistent approach.
While the initial agreement stood at a hefty US$10 million (approximately R$61.3 million), sources close to Cruzeiro revealed that Vélez repeatedly altered the terms of the contract, ultimately frustrating the Brazilian club’s leadership. This led Cruzeiro to abandon the pursuit of the promising young defender.
Gómez, a product of Vélez’s youth academy, made his professional debut in 2022 and has also represented Argentina’s under-20 national team. His potential and experience made him an attractive target for Cruzeiro, who were seeking defensive reinforcements.
The acquisition of Gómez was championed by Pedro Lourenço, the owner of cruzeiro’s SAF (Sociedade Anônima do Futebol). Despite this setback, Cruzeiro has already secured several high-profile signings for the 2025 season.
Star forwards Dudu and Gabigol will bolster the attack, while the midfield will be strengthened by the additions of Rodriguinho and Eduardo. Christian joins as a defensive midfielder, Fagner adds experience at right-back, and the club has also retained the services of central defender Villalba. The arrival of Bolasie further enhances Cruzeiro’s attacking options, demonstrating the club’s ambition for the upcoming season.

Cruzeiro Misses out on Gómez: A Chat with Carlos Alberto Parreira
Welcome back, football fans! Today, we’re diving deep into the recent news surrounding Cruzeiro’s failed pursuit of Argentine defender Valentin Gómez. To shed some light on this developing story and its implications, we’re joined by legendary Brazilian coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira. coach Parreira, welcome to the show!
Carlos Alberto Parreira: it’s a pleasure to be here.
Moderator: Coach, let’s get right into it. Cruzeiro seemed poised to land Gómez, but the deal fell apart due to what’s being described as ”inconsistent” contract negotiations from Vélez Sarsfield. What are your thoughts on this situation?
Parreira: It’s unfortunate when a promising transfer collapses, especially when both clubs had seemingly reached an agreement. Contract negotiations can be complex, and sometimes misunderstandings or last-minute demands can derail the entire process. from what I understand, Vélez Sarsfield’s shifting terms appear to have been the main stumbling block for Cruzeiro.
Moderator: Absolutely. Cruzeiro’s leadership, especially owner Pedro Lourenço, was vocal about wanting Gómez. This setback must be frustrating.
parreira: It definitely is. When you clearly identify a player who fits your needs and have the financial resources to secure them, it’s naturally disappointing when external factors prevent the transfer. Though, professional football is full of these twists and turns.
moderator: Cruzeiro has already made several meaningful signings for the upcoming season, including stars like Dudu, Gabigol, and Rodriguinho. Would you say this loss significantly weakens their squad?
Parreira: Not necessarily. cruzeiro has clearly shown ambition this transfer window, assembling a very strong team. Losing Gomez is a blow, especially given his raw talent and potential, but they have other defensive options already on the roster.Additionally, the acquisition of a seasoned defender like Fagner shows their commitment to strength in all areas.
Moderator: Do you think this situation could affect Cruzeiro’s long-term transfer strategy? Will they be more cautious in future negotiations?
Parreira: It’s possible. This experience might make Cruzeiro more meticulous in their due diligence during negotiations with other clubs. They might also consider building stronger relationships with clubs and agents to avoid such last-minute breakdowns in communication.
Moderator: Coach Parreira, thanks for sharing your insights on this complex situation. It’s clear that this transfer saga highlights the delicate balance required in modern football negotiations. What would you say to Cruzeiro fans who are feeling disappointed right now?
parreira: I would tell them to remain confident. This setback doesn’t diminish the club’s ambitions or the quality of the squad they’ve assembled.Cruzeiro has a strong future ahead, and with the talent they’ve acquired, they have every reason to aim for success in the upcoming season.
