From Ballroom to Championship: A Conversation with Dance Champion Katharina Schmidt
Welcome back, dance enthusiasts! Today, we have the pleasure of sitting down with the incredibly talented Katharina Schmidt, former World Latin Champion and renowned dance coach.Katharina, thank you so much for joining us.
katharina: It’s a pleasure to be here.
Now,Katharina,Kuschill Dance Gallery recently launched a series of dance programs geared towards young enthusiasts,including those aspiring to compete. What are your thoughts on this initiative?
Katharina: I think it’s absolutely fantastic.Introducing young children to the world of dance, particularly Latin dance, at such an early age is invaluable. It fosters rhythm, coordination, and confidence—qualities that extend far beyond the dance floor.
The gallery explicitly mentions “tournament group training” sessions. How crucial is structured training for
those aiming for competitive success?
Katharina: Structured training is absolutely essential. It’s not just about learning the steps; it’s about developing technique, building stamina, understanding musicality, and learning to perform under pressure.A good coach, like those at Kuschill, can guide young dancers on this journey, pushing them to their full potential.
The gallery offers specialized programs for different age groups. “Latin Minis” for ages 5-8 and ”Latin Mix” for those 8-12 seem particularly appealing. Do you see these programs as a stepping stone to more serious competitive endeavors,or are thay primarily focused on fostering a love for dance?
Katharina: I believe it can be both. While these programs are designed to be fun and accessible for young children, they also lay the foundation for more advanced training should the child choose to pursue competition. The key is to nurture their passion for dance frist and foremost. If competition becomes a natural progression,that’s fantastic. If not, they’ve still gained valuable life skills through dance.
Kuschill Dance Gallery also emphasizes a “supportive and inspiring dance family” atmosphere. Why is this sense of community so meaningful in a competitive environment?
Katharina: Dance can be incredibly mentally and physically demanding. Having a supportive network of fellow dancers, coaches, and families can make all the difference.It creates a positive space where children can learn, grow, and push themselves without feeling overwhelmed. Remember, dance is ultimately about expressing oneself and finding joy in movement.
What advice would you give to parents considering enrolling their children in these programs?
* Katharina:
Talk to your children, gauge their interest, and make sure they’re truly passionate about dancing. Don’t push them into it if they’re not ready. And most importantly, emphasize the importance of having fun and enjoying the journey.
That’s wonderful advice, Katharina. Thank you so much for sharing your insights with us today.
