Aussie Dominance: Can Sanders Claim Dakar Glory?
Welcome back, rally fans!
Today, we’re joined by two-time Dakar rally champion, the legendary Cyril Despres, to break down the remarkable start Daniel Sanders has made at the 47th edition of the Dakar. Cyril, thanks for joining us.

It’s a pleasure to be here. This Dakar is shaping up to be a classic!
Let’s dive straight into it. Sanders has been unstoppable, winning the prologue and the first two stages. What’s your take on his performance so far?
Cyril Despres:
Daniel is riding wiht incredible confidence and speed. He’s clearly found a rhythm that suits him and the KTM machine is performing flawlessly. Winning the prologue and the first stage is no mean feat, and leading Stage Two by 40 seconds over the defending champion, Ricky Brabec, is a statement.
Do you think Sanders has what it takes to go all the way and claim the Dakar title?
Cyril Despres:
It’s still early days, the Dakar is a gruelling race, and anything can happen. But sanders definitely has the potential.
He’s proven himself to be a fast and consistent rider, and his mental resilience will be tested over the coming weeks. We’ll see if he can maintain this pace over the long haul.
He’s certainly setting a high bar for his competitors. Ross Branch, the reigning world champion, is further back, almost four minutes adrift. how do you see him reacting to this pressure?
Cyril Despres:
Ross is a strong rider and won’t give up without a fight. He’s known for his smooth and calculated approach, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts to chip away at Sanders’ lead. This Dakar could come down to a battle of attrition between these two.
What about Tosha Schareina, the valencian rider who finished fourth today?
Cyril Despres:
Tosha is always a threat on the sand, but he’ll need to find an extra gear if he wants to stay in contention for the overall victory.
