Danish ⁢badminton star ⁤Anders antonsen is gearing⁣ up to defend his Malaysia Open title in 2025, but his excitement is tinged with disappointment ​over the​ withdrawal of Malaysian shuttler Lee zii Jia.Antonsen, who was hoping for a rematch against his friend and rival after their thrilling encounter ​at the 2024 Malaysia Masters,⁤ expressed sympathy for ‍Zii Jia’s unfortunate injury.

“it’s a major ⁢event, kicking ‍off the year with a Super‌ 1000 tournament is astonishing,” Antonsen shared. “While I’m excited, I ⁣don’t feel any extra pressure ⁢as‍ the defending champion. At this⁢ level, anyone can win, and every match is a 50/50 battle.”

Zii Jia, 26, ‌sustained a ‌right ankle ⁤ligament injury during the BWF World tour Finals last month and hasn’t fully recovered, according to a statement released by Team LZJ. Antonsen expressed his well ​wishes for Zii Jia’s‌ speedy⁤ recovery and hopes​ to see him back on the court soon.

Despite Zii Jia’s absence, Antonsen remains focused on​ securing his fourth​ title of the year, having already triumphed at the European Championships, ⁤Denmark Open, ​and China Masters in 2024. However,he acknowledges the⁢ challenge ahead,particularly his first-round match⁣ against the formidable ⁤Taiwanese shuttler Wang ⁤Tzu Wei.

“Wang Tzu Wei‌ is a risky⁢ opponent who can⁣ challenge anyone on his best day,” Antonsen ​stated. ⁤”I’m taking him very seriously and ‌will be giving this match my full attention. After that, ⁢we’ll see what ​happens.”

Anders: Of course,it’s disappointing. Zii Jia ⁣is a fierce competitor and our matches are always exciting. We push each othre ⁤to our limits, and that kind of challenge⁢ is what I thrive on. But injuries‌ are a part of the game, and ⁤I wish him a speedy recovery.

You mentioned pushing each other to the limit. Do you think Zii Jia’s absence might actually change the dynamic ‌of the tournament, perhaps opening up the field ‌for other contenders?

Anders: absolutely. Badminton is incredibly ‍competitive at this level. Anyone can win‍ on any‌ given day. While ⁤zii ​Jia is definately a⁢ top player, his‍ absence definitely levels the playing field. It gives other⁤ players a chance to ‍step up and make a statement.

Speaking of stepping up, you’ve had a​ phenomenal year already,‌ securing titles at‍ the European Championships, Denmark Open and China masters. Do you feel any added pressure defending your⁣ Malaysia ⁣Open title,‍ knowing you’re already coming‍ in as a favourite?

Anders: Not really. I try to approach every ‌tournament with the⁣ same mindset – focus on my game, one match at a time. Of course, it’s always special defending a title, but I don’t let it add undue pressure. At this level, everyone is gunning‍ for the win, regardless of past results.

Your first ​round opponent is‍ none other than the ever-talented Wang Tzu Wei. A tough draw without a doubt. How are you approaching this match?

Anders: Wang Tzu Wei is a fantastic ‍player, very tricky and incredibly talented. I know he’ll push me hard. But‌ I’m prepared for the challenge. I’ve been training hard and analyzed his game⁣ thoroughly. I’m coming in fully focused and ready to give it my all.
