lamkel Zé Back in Belgium: A Second Chance or Missed Opportunity?
Didier Lamkel Zé, teh Cameroonian winger known as much for his talent as his controversies, has found a new home in Belgium with STVV. After his contract with Fatih Karagümrük SK was recently terminated, Zé had a choice of suitors, with both Standard and OH Leuven reportedly interested in acquiring his services. However,it was STVV who moved decisively, adding the 28-year-old attacker to their ranks for the remainder of the season.
to discuss Lamkel Zé’s return to Belgium and whether this represents a fresh start or a predictable pitfall, I’m joined by former Belgian international and iconic midfielder, Gert Verheyen. Welcome, Gert.
Gert: Thanks for having me. Always happy to chat about Belgian football. Zé certainly is a fascinating case, isn’t he?
Moderator: Absolutely. Zé initially made a name for himself with Antwerp FC, displaying real flashes of brilliance. But off-field issues seemed to consistently overshadow his on-field contributions. Do you think this move to STVV represents a genuine chance for him to turn things around?
Gert: Well, STVV is a good club, no doubt. They’ve had a lot of success integrating players looking for a second chance. But Lamkel Zé’s history is certainly a concern. He needs to show real maturity both on and off the pitch. Talent alone isn’t enough at this level.
Moderator: He’s certainly had stints in other leagues since leaving Antwerp. He played in Turkey and even had a brief period in China. Do you think those experiences could have helped him grow?
Gert: Maybe. Playing abroad can be a real eye-opener, forcing players to mature and adapt. But it’s hard to say definitively if it’s changed Zé for the better.Actions speak louder than words. We’ll see what he does on the pitch and how he conducts himself off it.
Moderator: STVV rolled the dice on him, while clubs like Standard and OH Leuven, both arguably bigger names, showed interest but didn’t ultimately make the move. What do you make of that?
Gert: I think it comes down to risk versus reward. Standard and Leuven might have been wary of the potential disruption Zé could bring. STVV might be willing to take that risk, hoping that the reward of unlocking his potential is worth it. It’s a gamble, without a doubt.
Moderator: What do you think about Lamkel Zé’s impact on the Jupiler Pro League? Will he set it alight with his talent or become another cautionary tale?
Gert: That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? He’s certainly capable of exciting moments, there’s no denying that. But whether he can channel that talent consistently and remain a positive influence on the team remains to be seen. It’s going to be fascinating to watch.
