Sheikh mansour’s Equestrian Empire: An Interview with Champion Jockey Frankie Dettori
Sheikh Mansour, the man who turned Manchester City into football royalty, is now making waves in the world of horse racing. His recent €28 million acquisition of the historic Fresnay-le-Buffard stud Farm in Normandy, France, has sent ripples through the equestrian community. To help us understand the meaning of this move, we’re joined by racing legend Frankie Dettori, a three-time Derby winner and one of the most recognizable names in the sport.
Frankie, welcome!
Frankie Dettori: Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to talk about racing.
Moderator: Sheikh Mansour already owns a substantial racing stable. What do you make of his latest investment – purchasing a stud farm with such a rich pedigree?
Frankie Dettori: It’s a brilliant move, isn’t it? Fresnay-le-Buffard is steeped in history, and it’s produced some truly world-class horses. Think of the legendary Ribot, and more recently, the great Sea The Stars. To have access to those bloodlines, to breed and raise future champions, is a game-changer for any owner.
Moderator: Absolutely. This acquisition goes beyond just the land and the horses. The purchase includes a stunning 640 square meter castle and 240 hectares dedicated to the care and training of these animals. Do you think this signals Sheikh Mansour’s intent to become a major force in breeding as well as racing?
Frankie Dettori: I wouldn’t doubt it for a second. You don’t invest that kind of money just for show. He’s clearly serious about building a dynasty in horse racing, and that means controlling every aspect, from breeding to training to racing.
Moderator: That’s a compelling argument. Some might see this as another example of wealthy individuals acquiring sporting assets.Do you think there is a danger of this trend concentrating power and diminishing opportunity for smaller stables and breeders?
Frankie Dettori: It’s a valid concern. Accidents can happen in horse racing, but generally the horses come first in true stable management. We see it time and time again that superior breeding doesn’t necessarily translate into superior horses. It’s about the training, the jockey, even a bit of luck on race day.Ultimately, the best horses will rise to the top, regardless of who owns them.
Moderator: That’s a reassuring viewpoint. What are your thoughts on the future of Fresnay-le-Buffard under Sheikh Mansour’s ownership?
Frankie Dettori: I think it’s going to be exciting. Sheikh mansour has shown a willingness to invest in the best, and I have there’s no doubt whatsoever he’ll continue that trend at Fresnay-le-Buffard.This could be the start of a golden era for this historic stud farm.
Moderator: We’ll certainly be watching with great interest. Thank you for sharing your insights, Frankie.
frankie Dettori: My pleasure. Always happy to discuss the sport I love.
