Ruddy: This win isn’t just about me, it’s a testament to the tireless work of everyone involved in the San Juan Chess Association, the Dominican Chess Federation, and the entire chess community in San Juan. We’ve been nurturing a culture of excellence, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see this dedication paying off.
That said, I’m incredibly proud of this accomplishment. Three consecutive championships don’t come easy. It requires dedication, countless hours of practice, and the unwavering support of loved ones.
Absolutely. You mentioned the “chess community.” How crucial is it to have a strong support system, even within a seemingly individual sport like chess?
Ruddy: Very important. While chess is often perceived as an individual pursuit, the reality is that it takes a village. A strong chess community provides invaluable resources: mentors, sparring partners, tournaments, and most importantly, a sense of belonging.
Knowing there’s a dedicated group of individuals rooting for you, wanting to see you succeed, creates an incredibly motivating surroundings.
I can certainly see that. President Roa highlighted the emergence of young, promising talent in San Juan. As a leading figure in the local chess scene, what advice would you offer to these aspiring chess players?
Ruddy:
Passion and hard work are essential. But I’d also say, don’t be afraid to lose. Every defeat is an opportunity to learn and grow. Find a mentor, study every game, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.
Chess is a beautiful game that requires patience, strategy, and mental fortitude. Embrace the challenges.
That’s sage advice. Looking forward, what are your aspirations for the future? Where do you see yourself in the world of chess?
Ruddy:
My immediate goal is to continue representing San Juan and the Dominican Republic at national and international tournaments.
I aspire to obtain the title of International Master and eventually,Grandmaster.
Beyond personal achievements, I hope to play a role in fostering the growth of chess in the Dominican Republic. We have immense potential, and I want to help create opportunities for young players to flourish.
