Unfinished Buisness: Discussing the Aborted 2020/21 Eredivisie Badminton Season with Former Champion, Mark van der hoeven
The world of sports is no stranger to unexpected turns. The 2020/21 Eredivisie badminton season in the Netherlands was one such example, abruptly halted in its tracks by the COVID-19 pandemic. While disappointment hung heavy in the air, one team, BC Drop Shot, emerged as a dominant force during the regular season. To delve deeper into this unfinished season, we sat down with former Eredivisie champion and badminton analyst, Mark van der Hoeven.
Moderator: Mark, thanks for joining us today. Looking back at the truncated 2020/21 season, BC drop Shot was clearly a force to be reckoned with. Five wins, an undefeated record, a staggering 33-7 game record – they were untouchable. How do you assess their performance during that shortened season?
Mark van der Hoeven: BC Drop Shot were playing some phenomenal badminton. Their dominance was evident from the start. They displayed exceptional teamwork, tactical prowess, and individual brilliance. They were clearly the team to beat, and it’s a shame we couldn’t witness them fight for the title in the finals.
Moderator: Absolutely. It does leave a sense of “what could have been.” Aviair Almere BV were also hot on their heels, with a 5-0 win record themselves. What separated these two top teams in your opinion?
Mark van der Hoeven: Both teams were incredibly strong, but Drop Shot had that extra edge in terms of depth and consistency. Their ability to win crucial moments and arguably their greater firepower in doubles, played a key role.
Moderator: Speaking of the finals, obviously, their cancellation was a major blow to the players and fans alike. Do you think the Eredivisie explored every avenue to salvage the season?
Mark van der Hoeven: The pandemic forced everyone’s hand, and safety was paramount. But I do believe the Eredivisie could have explored more creative solutions, perhaps a condensed playoff format, even if it meant adjusting the usual schedule. It’s easy to say in hindsight, but the abrupt end was painful for everyone
Moderator: Now, looking beyond the disappointment, are there any positive takeaways from this incomplete season?
Mark van der Hoeven: Definitely. It highlighted the unbelievable talent pool within Dutch badminton. The competition was fierce even in the shortened format, and several young players really stepped up. This bodes well for the future of the sport in the Netherlands.
And despite the lack of a champion, BC Drop shot’s performance shone a light on the remarkable standard they’ve set.
Moderator: That’s a great point. The Eredivisie has always been known for its competitive spirit and skillful players. What are your expectations for the
upcoming season?
mark van der Hoeven: I anticipate another thrilling season. BC Drop shot will undoubtedly be aiming for the title they missed out on, but I wouldn’t discount Aviair Almere BV and other rising contenders like Le Credit Sportif Velo. It’s going to be a battle royale out there!
