PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir has vehemently denied allegations of pressure from a so-called “football mafia” influencing the decision, stating that the move was made solely based on the team’s performance.
The firing comes as a surprise, especially considering it precedes preparations for the crucial 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers. Shin Tae-yong’s tenure saw mixed results, wiht the team failing to reach the semifinals of the 2024 AFF Cup despite fielding a predominantly young squad. PSSI had set aspiring targets for the tournament, aiming for a semifinal berth.

Indonesian Football in Chaos: A Discussion with Coach Rahmad Darmawan
Welcome back to The Dugout, folks! Today we have the priviledge of hosting legendary Indonesian coach, Rahmad Darmawan, to dissect the recent turmoil surrounding the Indonesian national team. Coach Darmawan, welcome to the show!
RD: Thank you for having me. Always a pleasure to share my thoughts on Indonesian football.
Moderator: You’ve seen it all in Indonesian football, coach, the highs and the lows. the recent dismissal of Shin Tae-yong just months away from crucial World Cup qualifiers has certainly sent shockwaves thru the community. Your immediate reaction?
RD: It’s indeed a bold move. While the PSSI Chairman claims the decision is purely based on performance, the timing is incredibly suspect. We’re talking about World Cup qualifiers, the pinnacle for any national team. Dismissing a coach at this stage is risky, especially considering Shin had been building something with the team.
Moderator: Do you think there’s merit to the claims of interference from a “football mafia,” as hinted at by some sections of the media and fans?
RD: Honestly, those rumors have been swirling around for years. Whether they directly influenced this decision is unknown, but it can’t be fully discounted. Indonesian football has always struggled with these undercurrents, and clarity is sorely lacking.
Moderator: We all know the AFF Cup campaign wasn’t ideal, but are we being too hasty in throwing away what Shin Tae-yong built? He was clearly focused on developing young talent.
RD: I agree that Shin invested heavily in youth, and thatS crucial for the future. However, at the national level, results are paramount. The AFF Cup performance was disappointing. The lack of enthusiasm from the players was concerning too, perhaps suggesting the relationship between Shin and his squad wasn’t ideal.
Moderator: So, you’re saying there were possibly deeper issues at play beyond just the on-field results?
RD: Exactly. Players must be motivated, trust their coach, and feel a sense of unity. Ultimately, that’s what drives success. If those elements were missing, then maybe a change was necessary, but the timing raises eyebrows.
Moderator: This begs the question: does Indonesian football put too much pressure on its coaches? We’ve seen several coaching changes in recent years.
RD: Absolutely. There’s a lack of patience and long-term vision.Lasting development takes time. We can’t keep chopping and changing coaches every time results fluctuate. It disrupts the progress and confuses the players.
moderator: Coach Darmawan, this is a pivotal moment for Indonesian football. What needs to happen now to ensure the team is adequately prepared for the World Cup Qualifiers?
RD: First and foremost, the PSSI needs to be transparent about their decisions and clearly communicate their long-term vision for the team. They need to choose a replacement who understands Indonesian football’s pressure cooker surroundings and is committed to building a cohesive unit. the players need to step up. They need to show passion, commitment, and play as a team, irrespective of who’s at the helm.
Moderator: A lot to think about, indeed. Coach Darmawan, thank you for your insightful commentary. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the situation and eagerly awaiting the PSSI’s next move.
