Ester Wolff, a biathlete from Cēsu Sports school, stepped onto the global stage with her first appearance at the Biathlon World Cup. Her sprint performance was marred by shooting struggles, as she missed five targets, landing her in 76th place out of 97 competitors. This result left her 30 seconds shy of qualifying for the pursuit race. Despite this, wolff showcased her skiing prowess, clocking the 56th fastest time, outpacing her sisters Sanita and Sandra Bulinas, who ranked 69th and 72nd, respectively. However, her sisters outperformed her in shooting accuracy, with Sandra finishing 52nd and Sanita 54th.
national team coaches entrusted Wolff with a spot in the 1+1 relay, where she teamed up with Renārs Birkenthal. Together, they clinched a commendable 10th place in a field of 25 teams. Birkenthal opened the relay, using two spare cartridges in the first leg. Wolff followed, requiring three spares—two during prone shooting and one in the standing position. Birkenthal returned for the third leg, using two more spares, while Wolff anchored the final stage. She executed a flawless prone shooting round, exiting the range in 7th place. Though, a penalty lap in the standing shooting dropped her to 10th, a position she maintained until the finish. Latvia trailed the Czech team, who secured 9th place without penalty laps, by 17.9 seconds, and the victorious Finnish pair by nearly two minutes.
this achievement marks Latvia’s strongest performance in the pairs relay this season, surpassing the 13th-place finish by Baiba Bendika and Andrejs rastorgujevs in the first stage of the competition.
Meanwhile, Baiba Bendika, Latvia’s top biathlete, has faced challenges with shooting accuracy this season. Last week, she competed in the IBU Cup, participating in three events: two sprints and one pursuit. In her first sprint, she placed 14th, hitting all prone targets but missing three while standing. Her second sprint saw similar results, with accurate prone shooting and two standing misses, earning her 9th place and raising hopes for a strong pursuit performance. Unfortunately, her shooting struggles persisted, with six missed targets across four rounds, resulting in a 13th-place finish.

Moderator: Welcome, everyone, to this exclusive interview with Baiba Bendika, one of Latvia’s most accomplished biathletes and a key figure in the national team. Baiba, thank you for joining us today. Let’s dive right into the recent Biathlon World Cup events.
Baiba Bendika: Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss biathlon and share insights about our performances.
Moderator: Let’s start with the mixed pairs relay, where Ester wolff and Renārs Birkenthal secured an remarkable 10th place. This marks Latvia’s best result in the pairs relay this season. What are your thoughts on their performance?
Baiba Bendika: I think it was a fantastic effort by both Ester and Renārs. For Ester, this was her debut in the elite league, and to finish 10th in such a competitive field is commendable. Renārs,as always, delivered a solid performance. Their teamwork was evident, and they managed to stay composed despite the pressure.
Moderator: Ester struggled with shooting in her individual sprint, missing five targets, but her skiing was strong. In the relay, she showed improvement, especially with a flawless prone shooting round. Do you think her shooting struggles are a matter of experience, or is there more to it?
Baiba Bendika: Shooting under pressure is one of the most challenging aspects of biathlon, especially for newcomers. Ester’s skiing speed is clearly a strength, and with more experience, I believe her shooting will improve. It’s about finding the right balance between speed and precision. I’ve been in her shoes, and it takes time to build that confidence on the range.
Moderator: Speaking of shooting, you’ve had your own challenges this season. In the IBU Cup, you missed several targets in the pursuit race, which impacted your final position. How do you approach these setbacks, and what adjustments are you making?
Baiba Bendika: It’s been a tough season in terms of shooting consistency. I’ve been working closely with my coaches to identify the root causes—whether it’s technique, focus, or even equipment.Biathlon is a sport of fine margins, and sometiems a small tweak can make a big difference. I’m staying positive and using these experiences to grow.

Baiba Bendika: It’s a combination of factors. First, we need continued investment in training facilities and support for young athletes. Second, exposure to high-level competitions is crucial. Athletes like Ester benefit immensely from competing in the World Cup, even if the results aren’t perfect initially. Lastly, we need to build a strong team culture where athletes support and push each other to excel.
Moderator: That’s a great point. Speaking of team culture, how do you view the dynamic between the younger athletes like ester and the more experienced members of the team?
Baiba Bendika: It’s a healthy dynamic. The younger athletes bring energy and fresh perspectives, while the veterans provide guidance and stability. I’ve always believed in leading by example, and I hope my experiences can help the next generation navigate the challenges of elite biathlon.
