The change of the tennis court into pickleball courts ‍was funded by $32,500 ‍from ‌the American Rescue Plan Act, a federal ‌initiative aimed at supporting community projects.

Initially, the contractor painted the courts in ⁤shining ⁣yellow and red without seeking approval from the city, according to Bellomo.⁣ “The colors were a disaster,” he remarked. After feedback, the courts were repainted in a more subdued blue and ‍green palette.

The new pickleball courts were designed with adaptability⁢ in⁤ mind, allowing them ⁢to revert to tennis courts when needed. This temporary setup ensures that the Fillmore⁣ High School tennis⁤ team can use the courts during‍ their⁤ season. The conversion process involves⁤ removing the pickleball nets and posts and‍ adding protective caps to restore the surface for tennis.

bellomo suggested that the courts be used for‌ pickleball from mid-August ‍to⁤ late october, leaving the remaining tennis court available year-round.⁤ This arrangement balances the needs of both sports enthusiasts and the school team.

The Fillmore‌ City Council unanimously approved the project on September 24, demonstrating strong community support for the initiative. The decision reflects the growing popularity of pickleball, which has seen a 40% increase in participation⁤ nationwide over the past two years,‍ according to‌ the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.
