Stanford Falls to Clemson in ACC Debut Despite Raynaud’s Double-Double
Stanford’s inaugural ACC game ended in a tough 85-71 loss against Clemson on january 1st. While French center Maxime Raynaud secured his 11th double-double of the season, a feat that currently leads the nation, the Cardinal struggled to maintain their early lead.
Stanford started strong, holding an 8-point advantage in the first half. Though, Clemson’s relentless offence, fueled by Chase Hunter’s 22 points and Chauncey Wiggins’ sharpshooting from beyond the arc, proved too much to handle. A decisive 10-0 run by the Tigers in the second half effectively sealed Stanford’s fate.
Raynaud, despite his remarkable double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds), faced difficulties from long range, going 0-for-6 on three-pointers. This offensive inconsistency, coupled with 16 turnovers that Clemson capitalized on for 25 points, ultimately contributed to Stanford’s downfall.
Guard Oziyah Sellers provided a spark for the Cardinal with 20 points, while Jaylen Blakes added 13. However, their efforts weren’t enough to overcome Clemson’s balanced attack.
The Tigers’ victory marked their third consecutive win in the ACC, showcasing their strength and depth.Jaeden Zackery chipped in with 16 points, while viktor Lakhin dominated the paint with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
Stanford, now 1-1 in the ACC and 9-4 will look to rebound quickly as they face a challenging road game against Pittsburgh on Saturday. This matchup will be a crucial test of their resilience and ability to adapt to the competitive landscape of their new conference. Despite the loss, Raynaud’s continued dominance on the court remains a shining spot for the Cardinal, solidifying his role as a key player for the team this season.
Stanford’s ACC Debut: A Double-Double Isn’t Enough
Welcome back everyone to Courtside chat! Today we’re diving into Stanford’s ACC debut, a tough 85-71 loss against Clemson. Joining me today is former NBA champion and esteemed basketball analyst, Charles Barkley. Charles, thanks for joining us.
Charles Barkley: Always a pleasure, its great to be here.
moderator: Let’s talk about Stanford’s Maxime Raynaud. An unbelievable 11 double-doubles already this season! He’s dominating the boards, but against Clemson, he struggled with his three-point shot. Was that a contributing factor to the loss?
Charles Barkley: Absolutely. You can’t rely solely on dominance inside. Raynaud needs to develop a consistent outside shot. In today’s game, big men have to be a threat from everywhere on the court. That 0-for-6 from beyond the arc hurt Stanford, especially when Clemson was hitting threes left and right.
Moderator: It’s interesting you mention Clemson’s three point shooting. Chauncey wiggins was really lighting it up. Do you think Stanford underestimated Clemson’s offensive firepower coming into this game?
Charles Barkley: I don’t think it was underestimation, more like Clemson simply played a phenomenal game. They were on fire from the outside and Hunter’s penetration was relentless. It’s a tough combination to defend. Stanford started strong, but Clemson’s second-half surge was just too much to handle.
Moderator: So, what’s next for Stanford? They face a tough road game against pittsburg on Saturday. What do they need to do to bounce back?
Charles Barkley: They need to learn from this loss. Limit the turnovers. Those 16 turnovers against Clemson were heartbreakingly costly. They have to value possession and execute their offense more effectively.
Moderator: Totally agree. Commanders like Oziyah Sellers and jaylen Blakes need to step up and provide consistent scoring support for Raynaud.
Charles Barkley: Exactly! They showed glimpses of brilliance, but they need to be more consistent threats.
Moderator]: Charles, final thoughts? Any predictions for the stanford-Pittsburg matchup?
Charles Barkley: It’s going to be a battle. Pittsburg is a tough team. But if Stanford tightens up their defense, minimizes those turnovers, and gets more consistent scoring from their guards, they have a chance.
