Fluminense Football Club has secured a promising addition to their goalkeeping ranks for the 2025 season. The Rio-based team announced on Monday (6) the signing of young goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga, who returns to Brazil after a stint with English Premier League giants Liverpool.
“Fluminense Football Club and Liverpool FC jointly announce the transfer of goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga. The player, a product of Fluminense’s esteemed youth academy, will undergo medical examinations before finalizing his contract. Pitaluga celebrated his 22nd birthday in december,” read the club’s statement on social media.
Pitaluga, a former Under-17 World Champion with the Brazilian national team, honed his skills within Fluminense’s youth system before embarking on a European adventure in 2020. While his time at Liverpool didn’t yield the desired first-team opportunities, he gained valuable experience through loan spells at St. Patrick’s Athletic in Ireland and Livingston FC in Scotland. Despite limited appearances for these clubs (a total of seven), Pitaluga is eager to reignite his career upon his return to Rio de janeiro.
Fluminense’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper has been ongoing since last year. The club’s initial attempts to secure Lucas Archangel from rivals Vitória fell through in the closing stages of 2024.
