As Rodez prepares to face Red Star at Paul-lignon on Friday, January 3rd, teh club’s management anticipates a quiet January transfer window. despite this expectation, Coach Didier Santini has made it clear that he desires to bolster his defensive line with the addition of a central defender.
Santini emphasized the need for increased competition within the squad, stating, “Currently, we have a core group of 13 players ready to start, compared to 16 last season. While the remaining players possess significant talent, they require further development. Introducing more competition will accelerate their progress.”
The coach is not simply seeking any defender; he has a specific profile in mind.Santini explained,”I’ve communicated a particular name to the leadership. I’m not interested in acquiring a player merely to fill a roster spot. I need someone who can promptly step into the starting lineup, seamlessly integrate into our tactical system, and possess the right mentality to quickly adapt to our team dynamic.”
Simultaneously occurring, midfielder Waniss Taïbi, poised to start against Red Star, is attracting interest from several clubs. Reports suggest that Spanish clubs Castellon and Alavès, along with a Dutch club, are actively pursuing the talented midfielder. As of Thursday, though, no formal offers had been received by Rodez.
“A Strong Foundation Starts at the Back” - Former defender Analyze’s Rodez Transfers
Welcome back! Today we’re joined by Franco Baresi, legendary AC Milan defender, to dissect rodez’s upcoming transfer window and coach Didier Santini’s desire for a starting caliber center back.
Franco, thanks for joining us.
Franco: It’s a pleasure. always happy to talk football and share my thoughts.
Rodez’s season seems to be mirroring what you built at AC Milan: strong defence as the foundation for success.
Franco: Absolutely. It’s the bedrock of any prosperous team. Without a solid defense, it doesn’t matter how many chances you create going forward.
Santini’s identified the need for a central defender, specifically someone who can step right into the starting lineup. What do you make of that approach?
Franco: I like it. It shows ambition. Santini isn’t settling for average. He wants someone who will instantly uplift the backline, someone with experience and leadership qualities.
It seems like Santini’s looking for more than just a body. He wants a leader on the pitch.
Franco:Precisely! Football is about more than just skill. You need a vocal presence who can organize the defense, calm nerves, and inspire those around them. That’s what made Maldini,Costacurta, and I such a formidable unit at Milan.
Do you think Rodez can realistically find someone who fits that mold mid-season?
Franco: it won’t be easy, that’s without a doubt. January transfers are always tricky. But if santini has a specific target in mind, and the club is willing to invest, then anything is absolutely possible.
You mentioned ‘investing.’ Santini has made it clear he doesn’t want just any defender; they need the right complexion for his tactical system. How crucial is fit in a defensive system?
Franco: Crucial! Every system has its nuances, its specific demands. A defender who excels in a zonal system might struggle in a man-marking setup. Santini knows his system, knows what he needs, and shouldn’t settle for anything less.
What advice would you give to a young center back trying to break into a new team?
Franco: Be hungry, be humble, and be a sponge. Absorb everything, learn from your teammates, study the game, and work harder than anyone else. Success doesn’t come overnight, but with dedication and the right attitude, you can achieve anything.
On a separate note, midfielder Waniss Taïbi seems to be attracting interest from Spanish and Dutch clubs. Hoping he stays at Rodez?
Franco: It’s always tough to lose talented players. But football is a business, and if the right offer comes along, it’s hard to deny a player his possibility. Hopefully, Taïbi can weigh his options carefully and make the best decision for his career.
Thanks for your time and insights, Franco. Always a pleasure to have your perspective.
Franco: My pleasure. I look forward to seeing how this season unfolds for Rodez.
