Fostering unity Through Football: Djibo’s “Peace and Social Cohesion Cup”
The vibrant city of Djibo concluded 2024 with a resounding display of sportsmanship and community spirit. On December 31st, the thrilling final of the “Peace and Social Cohesion Cup,” a maracana tournament organized by the Association Monde Rural (AMR) in collaboration with the Sahel Community Recovery and Stabilization project (PCRSS), took place at the former military camp.
Dubai FC emerged victorious, securing a hard-fought win against FC Saouraré in a penalty shootout (1-0) after a scoreless regulation time. This victory not only brought them the coveted trophy but also a cash prize of 75,000 francs, a new set of jerseys, and a football. The runners-up, FC Saouraré, received 50,000 francs, jerseys, and a football.
this tournament, now in its second year, serves as a powerful tool for promoting peace and social cohesion in Djibo. As hamed Abdourahmane, representing AMR, explained, the initiative aims to create a platform for interaction and unity between internally displaced persons (IDPs) and their host communities. The enthusiastic participation and diverse composition of the eight competing teams – comprising IDPs, members of the defense and security forces, and local youth – clearly demonstrate the success of this objective.
Aboubacar Sidiki Tamboura, the first vice-president of Djibo’s special delegation, presided over the final. He commended the young athletes for their dedication and praised the tournament for uniting the entire community through the shared passion for sport.
The “Peace and Social Cohesion Cup” is just one facet of AMR’s multifaceted approach to community development in Djibo. Throughout December, the association conducted a series of impactful activities, including a municipal youth day, environmental protection training, training on managing gender-based violence complaints, and a municipal consultation framework.
These initiatives, all part of the PCRSS, a collaborative effort between the Burkinabe government and the World Bank Group, aim to support communities affected by the ongoing security crisis. By fostering peace, unity, and resilience, the PCRSS strives to create a brighter future for the people of Burkina Faso.
Kicking Away Strife: A Chat with Coach Adama Traoré on Football and Unity
Welcome back, sports fans! Today, we have the privilege of sitting down with the renowned coach Adama Traoré, a man whose passion for football is only surpassed by his dedication to community building.Coach Traoré, welcome!
Coach Traoré: Thank you for having me. ItS a pleasure to be here.
Moderator: We’re eager to discuss the recent “Peace and Social Cohesion Cup” tournament held in Djibo. Your extensive experience in coaching young athletes in challenging environments makes your perspective invaluable. what are your initial thoughts on using football as a tool for promoting peace and unity, particularly amidst the ongoing crisis in Burkina Faso?
Coach Traoré: It’s a brilliant initiative. Football, at its core, is about teamwork, respect, and transcending differences. On the field, you have players from diverse backgrounds, with unique histories and experiences, coming together towards a common goal. This shared purpose, the thrill of competition, and the joy of victory – these are powerful unifying forces. It’s incredibly inspiring to see tournaments like this bring communities together, especially in places where divisions run deep.
Moderator: Indeed. The article highlighted that the tournament featured teams composed of internally displaced persons, members of the defense and security forces, and local youth. This intentional composition speaks volumes about the organizers’ commitment to fostering dialog and understanding. How notable is it, in your opinion, for young people to see their role models, potentially those they might perceive as “on the other side,” playing side-by-side on the same team?
Coach Traoré: It’s absolutely crucial. When young people see their local heroes, those they admire, interacting respectfully and working towards a common goal, it dismantles stereotypes and prejudices. It shows them that despite differences in circumstances or beliefs, shared humanity and the pursuit of a common good can prevail. In a society grappling with conflict, seeing those traditionally perceived as adversaries united on the pitch sends a powerful message of hope and reconciliation.
Moderator: The tournament, however, wasn’t just about achieving victory on the field. It served as one facet of a larger community development initiative by the Association Monde Rural. This multifaceted approach, addressing youth engagement, environmental protection, and gender-based violence, is truly commendable. Do you believe sports can serve as a catalyst for broader social change?
Coach Traoré: Absolutely! sports have the remarkable ability to transcend borders. They can ignite passion, build bridges, and inspire action. Organizations like AMR are using sports as a springboard for positive change, tackling critical social issues alongside the excitement of the game.By engaging young people through sports, they’re not just teaching them about teamwork and discipline – they’re empowering them to become agents of change in their communities.
Moderator: this brings us to the question of sustainability. How can we ensure that initiatives like these continue to thrive and make a lasting impact?
Coach Traoré: It requires a multi-pronged approach. We need sustained funding from governmental agencies, international organizations, and philanthropic individuals who recognize the power of sports for social good. We need dedicated individuals and organizations like AMR who are passionate about making a difference on the ground. And most importantly, we need active participation and ownership from the communities themselves. When people feel invested in these programs, they become champions, ensuring their longevity and success.
