A Champion’s Fight: Former Boxer Patrick Charpentier Battles for Recovery After Lung Transplant
former European welterweight champion Patrick Charpentier, known for his 1998 world title challenge against boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya, is facing a new opponent: a serious health crisis.
The 54-year-old, who relocated to Canada with his family in 2011, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2021.This debilitating lung disease progressively worsens over time, making breathing increasingly difficult.
Charpentier’s daughter, Pamela, launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her father’s medical expenses. She shared the harrowing details of his condition: ”My father required constant oxygen support and had to severely limit his physical activity. A lung transplant became his only hope for a longer life.”
The transplant, a complex and risky procedure, was triumphant. However, it triggered unforeseen complications, particularly affecting Charpentier’s heart, which was already weakened by his lung disease.
Currently, Charpentier remains in critical condition, under constant medical supervision in intensive care. His recovery is a long and arduous journey, requiring specialized care and unwavering support.
Charpentier’s boxing career was marked by remarkable achievements. From 1989 to 1998, he secured 27 victories, with 23 of those wins coming by knockout. He claimed the French championship title in 1994 and went on to defeat fellow Frenchman Valery Kayumba to become the European champion in 1995. After successfully defending his European title twice, Charpentier bravely challenged De La Hoya for the WBC championship in front of a massive crowd of 40,000 spectators in El Paso, Texas.
Now, Charpentier faces a different kind of fight, one that requires immense strength and resilience. His family and supporters are rallying around him, hoping for a positive outcome in this critical battle for his health.

It takes astounding mental fortitude, and the fact that Patrick underwent a major surgery like a transplant, knowing the risks involved, speaks volumes about his strength.
