Tragedy Strikes New Orleans: Former Athlete Among Victims of Deadly New Year’s Eve Attack
A horrific truck attack marred New Year’s eve celebrations in new Orleans, claiming the lives of 15 individuals and leaving over 30 injured. The incident occurred on the bustling Bourbon Street, a popular destination in the Louisiana city.
Among the victims was 28-year-old Tiger Bech, a former American football player who had excelled as a receiver for Princeton University. During his three seasons with the Tigers from 2016 to 2018, Bech amassed an impressive 53 catches for 825 yards and three touchdowns. While Tiger chose not to pursue a professional football career, his younger brother, Jack Bech, currently plays for the TCU Horned Frogs, a prominent American college football team.
Charles W. Caldwell, Tiger’s former trainer at Princeton, remembered him fondly, stating, “He embodied the spirit of a ‘Tiger’ – a fierce competitor with boundless energy, a cherished teammate, and a compassionate friend. Our last conversation centered around my pride in his growth during his time at Princeton and his achievements after graduation. My heart goes out to the entire Bech family.”
This tragedy underscores the vulnerability of public gatherings and the devastating impact of senseless violence. As the city mourns the loss of innocent lives, the nation grapples with the ongoing issue of public safety and the need for effective measures to prevent such horrific incidents from recurring.

The senseless violence that claimed the lives of 15 people, including former Princeton football star Tiger Bech, on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans has left the nation reeling. to process this tragedy and discuss its implications for athletes and public safety, I’m joined today by Deion Branch, Super Bowl champion and former New England Patriots wide receiver. Deion, thanks for joining us.
Deion Branch: My pleasure to be here. It’s a terrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to the victims and their families.
You were known for your electrifying presence on the field. What are your thoughts on a young athlete like Tiger Bech, whose promising future was cut tragically short?
Deion Branch: It’s simply heartbreaking. These young athletes work incredibly hard, dedicating themselves to their craft. To have their lives taken so violently, especially at the cusp of what could have been a brilliant future, is truly devastating. It’s a stark reminder that life is fragile and can change in an instant.
Tiger’s story is sadly not unique. We’ve seen athletes become victims of gun violence far to often. What do you think needs to be done to address this issue?
Deion Branch: This is a complex issue with no easy solutions. We need to have open and honest conversations about gun control, mental health resources, and addressing the root causes of violence in our communities. It’s a societal problem that requires a multifaceted approach. as athletes, we have a platform to raise awareness and advocate for change.
Some may argue that heightened security measures at public events are the answer. What are your thoughts on that approach?
Deion Branch: While security is vital, I don’t think we should live in fear. We need to find a balance between protecting ourselves and enjoying our lives. We can’t let terrorists or acts of violence dictate how we live.
You mentioned athletes having a platform. How do you think athletes can best use their voices to promote positive change considering this tragedy?
Deion Branch: Athletes have a unique ability to reach a vast audience. We can use our platforms to speak out against violence, promote understanding, and encourage empathy. We can also support organizations working to address the root causes of these tragedies.
