Among the victims was 28-year-old Tiger Bech, a former American football player who had excelled as a receiver for Princeton University. During his three seasons with the Tigers from 2016 to 2018, Bech amassed an impressive 53 catches for 825 yards and three touchdowns.While Tiger chose not to pursue a professional football career, his younger brother, Jack Bech, currently plays for the TCU Horned Frogs, a prominent American college football team.
Charles W. Caldwell, Tiger’s former trainer at Princeton, remembered him fondly, stating, “He embodied the spirit of a ‘Tiger’ – a fierce competitor with boundless energy, a cherished teammate, and a compassionate friend. Tiger’s story is sadly not unique.We’ve seen athletes become victims of gun violence far to often. What do you think needs to be done to address this issue?
Deion Branch: This is a complex issue with no easy solutions. We need to have open and honest conversations about gun control, mental health resources, and addressing the root causes of violence in our communities. It’s a societal problem that requires a multifaceted approach. as athletes, we have a platform to raise awareness and advocate for change.
Some may argue that heightened security measures at public events are the answer. What are your thoughts on that approach?
Deion Branch: While security is vital, I don’t think we should live in fear. We need to find a balance between protecting ourselves and enjoying our lives. We can’t let terrorists or acts of violence dictate how we live.
You mentioned athletes having a platform. How do you think athletes can best use their voices to promote positive change considering this tragedy?
Deion Branch: Athletes have a unique ability to reach a vast audience. We can use our platforms to speak out against violence, promote understanding, and encourage empathy. We can also support organizations working to address the root causes of these tragedies.
