Former French Football Star Convicted for Racist Remarks
Bernard Casoni, a former French national team player with a distinguished career spanning the 1980s and 1990s, was recently found guilty of making racially charged insults. The Orléans Criminal Court handed down the sentence on January 9th, 2024, following an incident that occurred in September 2023 while Casoni was coaching US Orléans, a club competing in FranceS third division.
The controversy stemmed from a press conference where Casoni, now 63, made disparaging remarks about the intelligence of his players, comparing them unfavorably to individuals of North African descent. His comments, which were widely publicized by Ici – formerly France Bleu - Orléans, led to his immediate dismissal from the club.casoni’s statement, “I did it in all the clubs I went to, I did it with North Africans! They are no more stupid than North Africans, eh…,” sparked outrage and prompted a formal inquiry.
The court ultimately imposed a fine of €25,000 on Casoni, with €15,000 suspended. he was also ordered to pay €1,501 in damages to the civil parties involved, including prominent anti-racism organizations SOS Racisme, Sportitude, and Licra.
During the trial, Casoni expressed remorse for his “inappropriate remarks” but denied harboring racist sentiments. However, the prosecutor, Elena Chevallier, argued that his words perpetuated harmful stereotypes and inflicted pain on the targeted community.
“Ther is a hierarchy of intelligence based on racial origin. How can we pretend that it doesn’t hurt, that it isn’t insulting?” she stated, highlighting the damaging impact of such rhetoric.
Representing SOS Racisme and Sportitude, lawyer Guillaume Traynard emphasized that Casoni’s comments reinforced a hazardous prejudice, portraying North Africans as intellectually inferior.
Casoni’s defense attorney, Emmanuel daoud, argued for his client’s acquittal, rejecting the label of “racist” and attributing the remarks to Casoni’s extensive experiance coaching in North Africa.
