Back to Back: A Conversation with coach Jeff Van Gundy on the Thunder’s Resurgence
Welcome back, basketball fans! This week, we have a true icon of the sport joining us: Coach jeff Van Gundy. Coach, thanks for taking the time.
Coach Van gundy: It’s a pleasure to be here. Always happy to talk hoops.
Host: Let’s dive right in. This Oklahoma City thunder team is making some serious noise. Their demolition of the Cavs, 134-114, was nothing short of impressive. what were your initial thoughts watching that game unfold?
Coach Van Gundy: Well, you coudl see right away that the Thunder came out with intensity and purpose. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was simply unstoppable in the frist quarter. His 15-point outburst was a statement. And let’s not forget christian Wood’s contribution.
Host: A dominant performance from Gilgeous-alexander, indeed. 40 points and 8 assists is a stat line that speaks for itself.
Coach Van Gundy: Absolutely. He’s been playing at an MVP level all season. But it’s not just about Shai. The Thunder are playing as a cohesive unit, everyone knows their roles, and they’re executing the game plan to perfection.
Host: We saw Lu Dort step up with a season-high 22, and Jalen Williams adding 19.This team is deep, that’s without a doubt.
Coach Van Gundy: That’s what makes them so perilous. They’ve got multiple scoring threats and a bench that can come in and make an impact.
Host: On the flip side, the Cavaliers struggled. Donovan Mitchell had an unusually off night: 8 points on 3-of-15 shooting. Do you think the Thunder’s defense deserves the credit, or was it just an off night for Mitchell?
Coach Van Gundy: The thunder defense deserves a lot of credit. They’re a very physical team, and they did a great job disrupting Mitchell’s rhythm. But hey, even the best players have nights off.
Host: Do you think this win is a statement for the thunder? They avenged their earlier loss to the Cavs and solidified themselves as a top contender in the West.
coach Van gundy: It certainly is a statement. The Thunder are a young team, but they’re playing with maturity and confidence. They’re not afraid of any opponent.
Host: It’s still a long season, but are you putting any money on them to make a deep playoff run?
Coach Van Gundy: Never underestimate a team with this kind of momentum. If they can stay healthy and maintain this level of play, they’re definitely a threat.
