The Iren Genova Quinto youth water polo teams wrapped up the pre-holiday season with a pair of decisive victories. The A team dominated Andrea Doria with a resounding 20-4 win, while the B team secured a hard-fought 10-5 victory over R.N. Imperia.
“We controlled the game from the outset, applying strong pressure,” remarked coach Arcifa Monassi, reflecting on the A team’s performance.”Despite some missed scoring opportunities that could have widened the gap, our overall performance was excellent.”
Enrico Olcese, coach of the B team, praised his squad’s defensive prowess. “Our defense was nearly flawless for most of the match,” he noted. ”Our goalkeeper and captain, Calza, provided a sense of security throughout the game. Priano’s two goals were also a highlight, marking his first multi-goal performance. Now,we can enjoy the holiday break,but we must remain focused on the challenging matches that await us in January.”

Today, we’re joined by Enrico Olcese, coach of the triumphant B team, to dissect these victories and discuss what lies ahead for these promising young athletes.
Welcome, Enrico! Congratulations on your team’s hard-fought victory over R.N. Imperia. You mentioned that your team’s defense was “nearly flawless”. Can you elaborate on what made their performance so impressive?
“Thanks! I truly believe our B team exhibited remarkable teamwork and tactical discipline. the players communicated effectively, anticipated the opponent’s moves, and effectively shut down their scoring opportunities. Calza, our goalkeeper and captain, was a rock in the net, providing a sense of stability and confidence to the entire team.
Priano’s two goals were also a highlight, marking his first multi-goal performance. What factors do you think contributed to his breakout game?
“Priano showed remarkable composure and decisiveness in front of the net.He’s been steadily improving throughout the season, and it was fantastic to see him finally capitalize on his chances. I think his confidence is growing, and this breakthrough will undoubtedly fuel his performance moving forward.”
While the A team’s victory over Andrea Doria was more dominant, do you think there are any lessons the B team can learn from their counterparts’ performance?
“absolutely! Watching the A team’s decisiveness and relentless pressure is a valuable learning experience for our younger players. We can certainly analyze their strategies and incorporate elements that might benefit our team’s gameplay. It’s all about continuous learning and advancement.”
With the holiday break approaching, how do you plan to keep the team focused and motivated while also allowing them to enjoy some well-deserved rest?
“Finding that balance is crucial. We’ll encourage the players to relax,spend time with family,and recharge. However, we’ll also provide them with individual training plans to maintain their fitness and skills. It’s important to stay sharp, both mentally and physically, so we’re ready to hit the ground running in January.”
Looking ahead to the new year, what are your goals and expectations for the B team?
“We’re aiming for consistent improvement and a strong showing in the upcoming matches. Our focus is on individual player progress, building team chemistry, and refining our game strategies. Ultimately, we want to compete at our best and challenge ourselves against tough opponents.”
