Mpetshi Perricard’s Dominant Start to 2025
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is making a powerful statement at the start of the 2025 season. After a thrilling victory over Nick Kyrgios in the opening round of the ATP 250 in Brisbane, the 21-year-old Frenchman continued his impressive form against American Frances Tiafoe.
Serving with remarkable precision and power, Perricard unleashed 20 aces and maintained a 67% frist serve percentage, showcasing his dominance on serve. This performance follows his remarkable 56 aces in his previous match,a testament to his exceptional serving prowess.
Perricard’s aggressive style was evident throughout the match. He secured the first set with a crucial break at 5-4, finishing the set with two stunning forehand volleys. In the second set, he came agonizingly close to victory, holding a match point on Tiafoe’s serve at 6-5. Even though a net cord denied him the win, Perricard remained composed and ultimately triumphed in a closely contested tiebreaker. This victory marks Perricard’s sixth win in seven matches against top 20 players, highlighting his ability to perform at the highest level.Reflecting on his performance, Perricard stated, “I’m pleased with my performance. I focused on being aggressive on his second serve, and it paid off.” He emphasized the positive impact of his pre-season training, stating, “I had a good preseason and I’m trying to incorporate new elements into my game. Playing against a top player doesn’t change my approach.”
Just a year ago, Perricard was ranked outside the top 200 and preparing for the Australian Open qualifiers. Now, sitting at number 31 in the world, he will face Czech player Jakub Mensik in the Brisbane quarterfinals. Mensik, ranked 48th, secured his spot by defeating Dusan Lajovic in straight sets.

MC: We have a lot to discuss, notably the meteoric rise of giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. This young Frenchman is making waves, isn’t he?
Márcos: Definitely. Perricard’s start to the 2025 season has been nothing short of electrifying. Beating Kyrgios and then taking down Tiafoe, both in commanding fashion, shows he’s ready to challenge the top players.
MC: Absolutely. His serving, in particular, is a sight to behold. 20 aces against Tiafoe is phenomenal! Do you think this aggressive style will be sustainable against the very best?
Márcos: It’s a risk-reward game, isn’t it? Big serving is a weapon, but it can also leave you vulnerable if your ground game isn’t solid.
Perricard needs to be careful not to become too predictable, relying solely on his serve. top players will adjust, and he needs to have answers beyond just firing aces.
MC: That’s a key point. His forehand volleys against Tiafoe showcasing his court coverage and finesse, which is encouraging. Do you see any parallels between Perricard and your own playing style, Márcos?

But each player is unique. Perricard needs to carve his own path and develop his game based on his strengths and weaknesses.
MC: Now, perricard is set to face Jakub Mensik in the brisbane quarterfinals.A tough test, but definitely winnable. What key factors will determine the outcome of this match?
Márcos: Mensik is a solid player, there’s no doubt whatsoever. But Perricard holds the momentum, and winning those tight moments against Tiafoe will give him a mental edge.
If Perricard can maintain his composure, dictate the pace with his serve, and find those crucial openings on return, he has a real shot at victory.
