Celebrating excellence: The Federal Martial Arts Gala and Ernesto Giaverina Award 2024
The sixth edition of the ‘Giaverina 2024 Award,’ hosted by the FIJLKAM federal martial arts movement, proved to be a resounding triumph. This prestigious event honored 180 outstanding individuals from Umbria, including athletes, coaches, and administrators, who have made significant contributions to the martial arts community.
Held in the grand sala dei Notari, the ceremony was a full house, with every seat occupied. Regional President Andrea Arena opened the event by paying tribute to the late maestro Ernesto Giaverina, a revered figure in the Umbrian martial arts scene. A poignant moment followed as attendees watched a film commemorating Nicholas Colombini, a young judoka from Terni who recently passed away.
Special recognition was extended to Coni Umbria, the Municipality of Perugia, and the Municipality of Terni for their unwavering support during the challenging 2020-24 Olympic cycle, which was heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.Their consistent backing was instrumental in the success of numerous martial arts events and initiatives.
The ‘Athlete of the Year’ awards were presented to:
Alessandro Bicorgni (Poets of Judo), Adele Ceccarelli (Clt, Wrestling), Ettore Mostarda (Fitness Terni, karate), and Silvia Guarducci (La Dolce Arte, Jujitsu).

A lighthearted moment occurred when the ‘white-yellow’ belt was presented to Pierluigi Vossi and Marco Schenardi, the Sports Councilors of the Municipalities of Perugia and Terni, respectively.
President Andrea Arena humorously remarked, “Traditionally, authorities receive the ‘honorary black belt,’ but we believe in earning every step in our world. We’re confident that in future editions, they’ll continue to prove their dedication and merit.”
“We will reunite, and the belt will transform its hue,” declared the Regional President, reflecting on the day’s events. “Today was a heartfelt celebration for our family, made possible by the unwavering support of my colleagues—Robertino Camilli in Judo, luciano Pierini in Wrestling, Gianluca Guazzaroni in Karate, and their respective sector consultancies. Together, we fostered a collaborative habitat that allowed us to aim for excellence. This is evident not only in the numerous national and international champions we’ve produced but also in the recognition from educational institutions. Through our programs, we’ve integrated sports with essential life values, shaping students into responsible professionals and citizens.”
The pandemic posed significant challenges for contact sports, with events halted and coaches navigating restrictions in training facilities. Many predicted the decline of these disciplines, but through resilience, values, and professionalism, the community rallied. today, participation numbers have surpassed pre-Covid levels—a testament to the dedication of coaches, managers, and the families who stood by us. “With optimism and determination,we can truly make a difference in the world,” he added.
Aurelio Forcignanò, Vice President of CONI, shared his enthusiasm: “It’s a joy to witness events brimming with such positive energy, which serves as a powerful catalyst for sports. The awards ceremony was a spectacle in itself, with 180 winners honored ahead of schedule—a testament to the magic of martial arts.”
Pierluigi Vossi, Councilor for Sport in the Municipality of Perugia, emphasized the constitutional recognition of sports’ importance. “While the Constitution acknowledges the value of sports, it’s our duty to translate this into action. As institutions, we work tirelessly to ensure this vision becomes a reality for our region. The martial arts movement is a cornerstone of Umbria’s sports scene, and today’s event further solidifies its significance.”
