## Adaptability and Evolution: guerschon Yabusele’s NBA Journey
Guerschon Yabusele, affectionately known as “The Dancing Bear,” has carved a unique path in the NBA. While initially envisioned as a power forward, Yabusele’s versatility has seen him embrace the role of center for the Philadelphia Sixers, showcasing his adaptability and evolving skillset. In his second NBA season (2018-19) with the Boston Celtics, Yabusele saw limited playing time, averaging just six minutes per game. However, his move to the Sixers has provided him with a platform to shine, averaging 24 minutes per game and contributing 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds.
Yabusele’s height (2.04 meters) lends itself naturally to the center position, but he admits that this wasn’t the role he initially anticipated. In an interview with BasketUSA [[2]], he revealed that the Sixers initially discussed his role as a power forward, a position he considers his natural fit. However, circumstances dictated a need for a center, and Yabusele stepped up to fill the void.
While he prefers his natural position, Yabusele demonstrates a willingness to adapt. He leverages his speed and agility to his advantage when playing center, exploiting the tendency of customary centers to remain closer to the basket. This allows him to create space for himself and capitalize on open three-point opportunities, a skill he has honed through his experiences playing in China, Villeurbanne, and Real Madrid since his time with the Celtics.
Returning to the NBA after his international stint, Yabusele was struck by the league’s accelerated pace. “It goes a lot faster,” he remarked, noting the increased number of possessions and the heightened physicality. The NBA’s constant evolution is evident in its ever-increasing speed, a factor that Yabusele has successfully adapted to.
Currently, the Sixers are battling for playoff contention, holding the 11th spot in the Eastern Conference with a record of 14 wins and 19 losses. Yabusele’s contributions, both as a power forward and center, are proving invaluable to the team’s success.

Guerschon, thanks so much for joining us.
Guerschon: it’s a pleasure to be here.
It’s been fascinating to watch your journey in the NBA.You’ve transitioned from a projected power forward role to embracing the center position with the Philadelphia Sixers. Was this shift a conscious decision, or did circumstances dictate it?
Guerschon: Honestly, it was a bit of both. When I frist came to the Sixers, we talked about me playing power forward, which feels more natural given my skillset. But as the season unfolded, the team needed a strong presence at center, and I stepped up to the challenge. It’s been a grate learning experience, and I’ve grown a lot from it.
Moderator: And you’re making this work! You’re averaging nearly 25 minutes a game, contributing significantly with points and rebounds. Your speed and agility seem to give you an edge against conventional centers. How do you use that to your advantage?
Guerschon: Absolutely.I know most centers tend to stay closer to the basket, so I use my quickness to create space. It opens opportunities for drives and slashes to the hoop, and it’s helped me develop my three-point shooting, something I worked on a lot during my time overseas.
Moderator: That’s engaging because you played in China, Villeurbanne, and Real Madrid after leaving the Celtics. How much did those experiences contribute to your current success?
Guerschon: Those years were crucial. Not only did I refine my skills, but I gained a global understanding of the game. Different leagues have different styles and tempos, and that broadened my viewpoint.
Moderator: It’s clear the NBA is a constantly evolving league. How has the pace of the game changed since your first stint in the NBA, and how have you adapted?
Guerschon: The game has definitely sped up! There are more possessions, more transition baskets, and the physicality is intense. It requires constant adaptation, but I’m a competitor at heart and I thrive on challenges.
Moderator: One final question – with the Sixers battling for playoff contention, what do you see as the team’s biggest strength going forward?
Guerschon: Our collective spirit. We’ve faced setbacks, but we never give up. We have a diverse group of talented players, and we’re starting to gel. The energy in the locker room is amazing, and we believe in each other.
