Introducing Heesch Youth to the Excitement of Badminton
The Heesche Badminton Vereniging (HBV) is on a mission to ignite a passion for badminton in the hearts of Heesch’s young residents. Through engaging clinics held at local primary schools, daycare centers, and after-school care facilities, HBV has already introduced over 500 children to the joys and challenges of this dynamic sport, with plans to reach even more in the future.
These hour-long clinics provide a fun and interactive introduction to badminton fundamentals. Led by enthusiastic HBV volunteers and youth leaders, each session accommodates approximately 25 children, emphasizing enjoyment and physical activity.
“This initiative allows us to promote an active lifestyle among Heesch’s youth while simultaneously raising awareness about badminton,” explains Bram van Herpen, the driving force behind the project.”Our hope is to inspire children to continue thier badminton journey after experiencing the thrill of the sport firsthand.”
This outreach program is a key component of HBV’s broader strategy to expand the reach of badminton and attract new members. Established in 1988, the club caters to both recreational players seeking a fun and social outlet and competitive athletes striving for excellence.
The success of the clinics is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the local sports agreement, the Bossche Badminton Federation, and the enthusiastic participation of Heesch’s schools and childcare institutions.
HBV extends an open invitation to everyone interested in trying badminton. Free introductory sessions are available on Thursday evenings for adults and Friday evenings for youth.

Serving Up Chance: Can Badminton Clinics Ignite a Passion for Sport in Heesch Youth?
Joining us today is renowned badminton coach and former national champion, Maria Jansen, to discuss the exciting initiative by the Heesch Badminton Vereniging (HBV) to introduce badminton to the youth of Heesch. Maria, welcome!
maria Jansen: Thank you for having me. Its fantastic to see initiatives like HBV’s, fostering a love for badminton in young people.
let’s dive into the details. HBV has already introduced over 500 children to badminton through clinics held at schools, daycare centers, and after-school care facilities. What are your initial thoughts on this approach?
Maria Jansen: I think it’s brilliant! Taking badminton directly into the community is a fantastic way to break down barriers and make the sport accessible to children who may not have otherwise encountered it. These early exposures can spark a lifelong passion.
The clinics focus on making badminton fun and engaging, emphasizing enjoyment and physical activity. Do you think this is the right approach to capture the interest of young children?
Maria Jansen: Absolutely. At that age, the focus should be on building a positive association with physical activity. Making it fun ensures they come back for more!
HBV’s ambition is to inspire children to continue their badminton journey. Do you think introducing the sport at this young age can lead to a growth in future competitive players?
Maria Jansen: Definitely. Many top athletes discovered their passion through early exposure like this. These clinics can act as a springboard for those with natural talent and a desire to compete.
Some might argue that focusing on a niche sport like badminton might not have the same impact as promoting more mainstream sports like football or basketball. What’s your response to that?
Maria jansen: Every sport has its place, and badminton offers unique benefits. It hones hand-eye coordination, agility, and strategic thinking.
Plus, it’s a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, making it truly inclusive.
