SpVgg Unterhaching has appointed Heiko Herrlich as thier new head coach, marking his return to the club after a decade. The third division team announced the appointment, expressing confidence in Herrlich’s ability to guide them through a challenging season.
“We are thrilled to welcome Heiko back to Unterhaching,” stated Haching President manfred Schwabl. “His extensive coaching experience and strong leadership qualities make him the ideal candidate to lead our team. He understands our club culture and the ‘Hachinger Way,’ which we established together during his previous tenure.”
Herrlich, who previously managed Unterhaching during the 2011/12 season, led the Munich suburban club to a 15th-place finish in the third division. Currently sitting at the bottom of the table, the club faces a crucial battle to avoid relegation.
“I’m excited to rejoin the Haching family,” said Herrlich. “My memories of my time here are overwhelmingly positive, particularly the strong sense of community and unity within the club. Our focus now is to unite our strengths and dedicate ourselves fully to securing our place in the third division.”
Herrlich’s appointment follows exploratory discussions with Felix Magath, who was also considered for the coaching position. Though, Magath ultimately declined the offer.
Back to the Future: A Conversation wiht Stefan Reuter about Herrlich’s Return to Unterhaching
We’re joined today by none othre than Stefan Reuter, former German international adn Bundesliga champion, to discuss the intriguing news out of the third division – Heiko Herrlich’s return to SpVgg Unterhaching. Welcome, Stefan.
Stefan: Thanks for having me. This news certainly brings back memories, and I’m excited to see what Herrlich can do in his second stint at Unterhaching.
Moderator: It’s definitely a bold move by the club. Last time Herrlich was at the helm, Unterhaching finished 15th. Now they’re at the bottom, facing relegation. Do you believe his experience is enough to turn things around?
Stefan:
It’s a tough situation, no doubt. Herrlich has to hit the ground running. But he knows the club, understands the culture, and that’s invaluable. His leadership style, as mentioned by President Schwabl, leans towards unity and community, which might be just what the team needs. They need to rediscover their identity, their fighting spirit.
Moderator: You’re right, the “Hachinger Way”. Herrlich has mentioned its importance. Do you think that philosophy will be enough to overcome the team’s current form?
Stefan:
I think it’s a fantastic starting point. The Hachinger Way,at its core, focuses on hard work, discipline, and teamwork. Anthropologically speaking, these are eternally relevant facets of success, especially in football. But they also need tactical adjustments. Herrlich will have to analyze the squad, identify weaknesses, and implement a winning strategy.
Moderator: Herrlich wasn’t the only name being thrown around. Felix Magath was reportedly in the running as well. What are your thoughts on the decision to go with Herrlich?
Stefan: Both are experienced coaches, but Herrlich’s familiarity with the club and his understanding of the hachinger way ultimately tipped the scales. Speaking from a coach’s outlook, I understand Magath might have brought a different approach, but sometimes continuity, notably in a situation like Unterhaching’s, can be more valuable. It helps with player morale and team cohesion.
Moderator: Absolutely. That sense of familiarity can be incredibly powerful. What message do you think this appointment sends to the fans, the players, and the league as a whole?
stefan: It’s a message of hope, which is vital when you’re fighting relegation. They’re saying, ”we believe in our identity,” “We believe in our coach,” and “We’re going to fight to stay in this league.”
It also sends a message to the league that Unterhaching isn’t giving up easily. They’re a club with a proud history, and they’re determined to write a new chapter in their story.
Moderator:
Excellent points, Stefan. We’ll be watching closely to see what unfolds. What are your predictions for Herrlich’s second stint at Unterhaching?
Stefan: It’s going to be a tough battle, no doubt. But with Herrlich’s leadership and the Hachinger Way leading the charge, I think they have a genuine chance to survive. they need to fight for every point, play as a collective unit, and rediscover that winning mentality. It’s a story worth following, that’s without a doubt.
moderator:
We couldn’t agree more.
