“Absolutely,” He said, nodding. “It makes the game faster, more exciting. Fans want to see goals, and when defencemen are joining the rush and creating scoring chances, it adds another dimension to the game. It’s more dynamic, more unpredictable.
But, he added, there’s a balance to be struck. “You can’t forget about the fundamentals, the defensive responsibilities. A defenseman’s priority is still to prevent the other team from scoring.”
He’s right. Irving’s coach must be walking a tightrope, nurturing his offensive instincts while remembering the importance of sound defense. I wondered if Jiri sees this trend continuing.
“Yes,definitely. Young players are learning the game differently now, with more emphasis on offensive skills. I think we’ll see more and more defenders like Irving emerging in the Extraliga. It’s going to be engaging to watch.”
