When asked if he was nearing a contract extension after months of speculation, the interim captain of the French national team responded with a smile, seemingly caught off guard. “Who mentioned discussions months ago?” Konaté quipped. “The club hasn’t said anything, and neither have I.” However, he later acknowledged ongoing talks with Liverpool’s management. “I’ve had conversations with the club, but my focus isn’t on that right now. You’ll see how things unfold.”
Pressed further about whether Liverpool had presented him with a new deal, Konaté confirmed, “Yes!” He added, “But the details are still being discussed.” Despite his cautious tone, the defender, who initially signed a five-year contract in 2021, appears poised to extend his stay with the Merseyside club.
“I’m Not Fully Fit, But I’m Playing Through the Pain”
During the press conference, Konaté also opened up about his recent fitness struggles. “I’ve been working to get back to full fitness, but I’m not quite there yet,” he admitted. “Still, I pushed myself for the team and contributed. I’ll be back at 100% soon. Right now,I’m playing through the pain.”
he dismissed concerns about worsening his condition,stating,“I’m not worried. My job is to play and recover quickly. I haven’t dwelled on the injury, but I’ve noticed it’s improving daily.Playing is helping me progress.”
Looking ahead to the match against lille, Konaté acknowledged the quality of their opponents. “They’re a strong team coming to Anfield with a clear goal,” he said.“Some may have underestimated them in the past, but the Champions League brings out the best in every player and team. We can’t afford to take them lightly.”
