Fostering a Love for Badminton: A Collaborative initiative
For the past two years, a unique program has been bridging the gap between elementary and middle school students through the exciting sport of badminton. Every Tuesday afternoon, the Jean Guimier gymnasium comes alive with the energy of CM1 students from Barbusse, Charcot, and Fraternité schools, as well as 6th graders from Courbet college, all eager to learn the fundamentals of this fast-paced racquet sport.
This initiative, generously funded by the Cité éducative, offers a ten-session cycle where students from both levels train together, fostering camaraderie and teamwork.Led by Frédéric Le Calvez,a dedicated sports educator from the Les Lilas – Romainville badminton club,and supported by their school and physical education teachers,the program provides a structured and engaging learning surroundings.
Building Skills and Connections
The program goes beyond simply teaching badminton techniques. It empowers students to develop new athletic skills,build confidence,and experience the joy of amiable competition through culminating matches at the end of each cycle. Moreover, it serves as a valuable bridge between elementary and middle school, allowing students to connect with peers from different schools and create lasting friendships.

Inspiring Future Athletes
The program’s impact extends beyond the gymnasium walls. by introducing students to a new sport, it sparks curiosity and potentially ignites a passion that could lead them to join local clubs and pursue badminton competitively. The culmination of the program is a celebratory sporting event in June at the Collette Besson gymnasium, where participants, their families, and friends come together to witness the students’ progress and celebrate their achievements.

This initiative has been captivating imaginations and encouraging physical activity in young people across the Les Lilas area. Can you tell us a little bit about what lead you to spearhead this program?
Frédéric:
My passion for badminton has always been strong, and witnessing its growing popularity, especially among younger generations, motivated me to create a program that could capitalize on that enthusiasm.
The collaboration between elementary and middle schools is a unique aspect of the program.Why did you feel it was notable to bridge this gap?
Frédéric:
Middle school can be a time of transition and adjustment for young people. By bringing together students from different schools and age groups, we hoped to create an habitat of camaraderie and mentorship. The older students can serve as role models for the younger ones,fostering a sense of community and shared experience.

Looking to the future, what are your hopes for this program and for these young athletes?
Frédéric:
My ultimate goal is to see these students embrace a lifelong love for badminton, whether they choose to join local clubs, pursue it competitively, or simply enjoy it as a recreational activity.

It’s truly a festivity of their dedication and progress. Seeing the students showcase their skills, support each other, and share this experience with their families and friends is an incredibly rewarding experience for me.
