About the EVI Project
The “Event Inclusion Managerin in Sport” project, or EVI for short, aims to empower individuals with disabilities by expanding their employment opportunities within the sports sector. The project strives to create a more accessible and inclusive sporting landscape for all. The EVI project is funded by the Equal Opportunities Fund of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS).
Leveling the Playing field: An Interview wiht Paralympic Champion, Anja Richter
Welcome back to “In the Zone,” your home for all things sports and inclusivity. Today, we have the absolute pleasure of welcoming Paralympic badminton champion, Anja Richter. Anja, thank you for joining us!
anja: Thank you for having me. It’s great to be here.
Moderator:
anja, the EVI project, as highlighted in this recent proclamation, is closing out its final phase with some exciting initiatives. What are your thoughts on the project’s overall impact on creating a more open and accessible sporting landscape for individuals with disabilities?
Anja:
I think the EVI project has been incredibly critically important. For many years, people with disabilities have been pushed to the sidelines in the sporting world. The EVI project, by focusing on employment opportunities within sports organizations, is tackling the issue at its root. When people with disabilities are part of the decision-making process, it naturally leads to more inclusivity across the board.
Moderator: The Dialog series, with its open forum for discussion, is a fantastic initiative. But do you think it’s enough to simply talk about inclusivity? Shouldn’t there be more tangible actions taken sooner?
Anja: I agree that action speaks louder than words. but I also believe open dialogue is crucial. We need to understand the challenges people with disabilities face in the sporting world, and we need to hear their voices. the Dialogue series can be a platform to spark those necessary conversations and identify concrete steps we can take together.
Moderator: The game days are intended to be practical workshops, providing hands-on experience and skills development. I love this approach. What kind of impact do you think these events can have on participants?
Anja:
These workshops are vital because they demonstrate that sport can be accessible to everyone. They provide a chance to learn new skills, build confidence, and overcome seemingly insurmountable barriers. The impact on individuals can be truly transformative.
Moderator:
Do you see models like the EVI project becoming the norm in the sporting world? Is there hope for the future of truly inclusive sports?
Anja:
I am optimistic. The EVI project is a shining example of what can be achieved when we prioritize inclusivity. More and more people are realizing that sports should be for everyone, regardless of ability. We need continued advocacy, dedicated resources, and a genuine commitment
from organizations and individuals alike.
Moderator: Thanks, Anja. we appreciate your candidness and insights. This is a conversation that needs to continue. Readers, what are your thoughts on the EVI project and its impact? share your perspectives in the comments below. Let’s keep the dialogue going!
