Cardona’s Potential Return to Saint-Étienne: A loan Deal in the Works
French striker Irvin Cardona played a pivotal role in Saint-Étienne’s promotion back to ligue 1 last season, netting an extraordinary 10 goals in 22 appearances, including two crucial strikes during the playoffs. Initially on loan from Augsburg, Cardona later joined Espanyol Barcelona on another loan spell. However, he has struggled to make a significant impact in Spain and is now poised for a return to the Greens, once again on loan.
While the move appears imminent, L’Équipe reports that financial intricacies still need to be ironed out. Espanyol, who covered Cardona’s loan fee, is seeking partial compensation for their investment. Despite this hurdle, there is a sense of optimism surrounding the deal. Saint-Étienne currently sits in 16th place in Ligue 1 at the halfway point of the season, and Cardona’s return could provide a much-needed boost to their attacking options.
Can Cardona Rescue Saint-Étienne?
Welcome back to “The Locker room”, where we dissect the hottest topics in the world of football. Joining us today is former Ligue 1 striker,Jean-Pierre Papin,to discuss Irvin Cardona’s potential return to Saint-Étienne.
Jean-Pierre, thanks for joining us.
JP Papin: It’s a pleasure to be here.
LetS dive straight into the news. Cardona, who was instrumental in Saint-Étienne’s promotion last season, is rumored to be returning on loan. What are your thoughts on this move?
JP Papin: Well, there’s no denying Cardona’s talent. He was a real force for Saint-Étienne last season, and 10 goals in 22 appearances speak for themselves. His performances during those playoffs were vital to their promotion.Though, things haven’t quite clicked for him at Espanyol.A return to a familiar environment coudl indeed be beneficial for him.
It’s been reported that Espanyol wants some compensation for covering Cardona’s loan fee. Do you think this could complicate the deal?
JP Papin: I wouldn’t say it’s a deal breaker, but it will need to be negotiated carefully. Saint-Étienne are in a precarious position, sitting 16th in Ligue 1. They need reinforcements, and Cardona could be the missing piece of the puzzle. If they can find a way to meet Espanyol’s demands, I think it would be a smart move for both clubs and, perhaps moast importantly, for Cardona himself.
Now, Saint-Étienne really struggled after their return to Ligue 1, and their attack has been inconsistent. Do you think Cardona alone can solve their problems?
JP Papin: It’s unlikely that one player can single-handedly turn a team’s fortunes around. Football is a team sport. However, Cardona’s arrival could uplift the entire squad. He brings goals, pace, and a winning mentality, which are invaluable assets. I believe his return will galvanize the existing players and inject much-needed confidence.
What do you think will ultimately decide if this deal goes through?
JP Papin: Financial negotiations are crucial, but I think the biggest factor will be Cardona’s desire. Does he want to return to Saint-Étienne, to a place where he’s appreciated and proven himself? I believe he does.
