roner’s Meteoric Rise in Compound Archery
Elisa Roner has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the compound women’s category. Her exceptional performance throughout 2024, including a historic first-place finish at the Antalya World Cup stage and a debut appearance in the World Cup Finals, has earned her a well-deserved nomination. Roner’s silver medal at the European Championships in essen further solidified her position as a top contender. she faces stiff competition from archery stars like Ella Gibson, Meeri-Marita Paas, Sara Lopez, and Andrea Becerra.
Travisani’s Paralympic Triumph
Stefano Travisani is a strong contender in the Para-archery men’s category. His remarkable achievement of winning the Paralympic gold medal in the mixed team event alongside Elisabetta Mijno in Paris, coupled with a silver medal in the team event at the European championships in Rome, has propelled him into the spotlight. Travisani will be battling it out against formidable opponents, including American archers Matt Stutzman and Jason Tabansky, India’s Singh, and Great Britain’s Nathan MacQueen.

A Bullseye Performance: An Interview with Archery Legend, Roberto Viola
Today, we’re joined by Italian archery icon, Roberto Viola, a three-time Olympic medalist and former world champion. Roberto, thank you for joining us.
Roberto: The pleasure is all mine. It’s always exciting to talk about archery and see the sport gaining more recognition.
Let’s dive right in. The World Archery awards 2024 nominations are out, and Italy has two impressive candidates – Elisa Roner in compound archery and Stefano Travisani in para-archery. What are your thoughts on their chances?
Roberto: I have high hopes for both of them. Elisa has had a phenomenal year, truly breaking onto the scene with that historic win in Antalya and a debut at the World Cup Finals. It’s no easy feat to compete against archers like Ella Gibson and Sara lopez, but Elisa has the skills and the grit to challenge them for the title.
And stefano? His Paralympic gold is truly remarkable.
Roberto: Absolutely. His performance alongside Elisabetta Mijno in Paris was incredible, showcasing Italy’s dominance in Paralympic archery. He’ll face tough competition from the likes of Matt Stutzman and Nathan MacQueen, but his experience and determination will serve him well.
Speaking of Elisabetta Mijno, it’s surprising to see her absent from the Para-Archery Women’s nominees despite her incredible achievements this year. What’s your take on that?
Roberto: That is indeed a head- scratcher. Elisabetta’s Paralympic gold and bronze, coupled with her European Championship title, are undeniable achievements. I wouldn’t be surprised if this omission sparks debate within the archery community.
The World Archery Awards rely heavily on public voting. How meaningful is fan support in boosting the chances of these Italian archers?
Roberto: Hugely critically important. Archery is a sport that thrives on passion and community.Every vote counts, and the Italian archery community, both at home and globally, needs to rally behind Elisa and Stefano. Their success is a reflection of Italy’s growing prominence in the archery world.
For our readers who might be new to archery, can you explain the nuances of the different categories, like compound vs. recurve, and para-archery?
Roberto: of course. Recurve archery is the conventional style, using a bow with curved limbs. Compound archery uses a more mechanical bow with pulleys and cables, enabling greater accuracy and power. Para-archery adapts the sport for archers with disabilities, employing assistive devices to allow everyone to compete at their best.
This is your expertise, Roberto. What advice would you give to young archers hoping to emulate the success of Elisa and Stefano?
Roberto: Dedication and perseverance are key. archery requires immense focus, patience, and a constant desire to improve. Don’t be afraid to push your limits, learn from every shot, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.
Roberto, thank you so much for sharing your insights and enthusiasm for the sport. It’s clear that the future of Italian archery is bright.
Roberto: Grazie mille!
