Anderlecht’s European Ambitions Hampered by Injury Woes
RSC Anderlecht’s veteran defender, Jan Vertonghen, faces an extended period on the sidelines due to a recent injury setback. His absence is a significant blow to the team, especially as they navigate a demanding schedule across multiple competitions.
Vertonghen, speaking candidly to Het Nieuwsblad, expressed his disappointment with the team’s current league position, stating,”I genuinely believed we’d be higher in the standings by now.” Despite this, he remains optimistic about Anderlecht’s prospects in both the Europa League and the domestic cup, emphasizing that “everything is still within reach.”
The immediate focus for Anderlecht is a crucial doubleheader against Royal Antwerp FC, a matchup Vertonghen views as a 50/50 proposition. Though, he acknowledges a deeper concern: the team’s ability to compete effectively on three fronts.
“Realistically, are we equipped to handle the demands of three competitions simultaneously? Not at the moment,” Vertonghen admitted. He attributes this partly to the current injury crisis affecting key players like himself, ashimeru, Hazard, and Stroeykens.
Vertonghen remains hopeful, stating,”If we can get these players back to full fitness, our chances improve dramatically.”
The gap between anderlecht and league leaders Genk and Club Brugge is a growing concern. Vertonghen recognizes the importance of sunday’s clash against Bruges, emphasizing that “nothing is insurmountable” and that a strong run in the playoffs is crucial for thier aspirations.

Jan: It’s frustrating, of course.I hate being sideline, especially when the team needs me. The injury is taking a bit longer to heal than initially anticipated, but I’m doing everything I can to get back on the pitch quickly. I’m aiming to be back in full training within the next few weeks, but I won’t put a concrete date on it just yet.
