A Marseille Legend Stays Put: Jean-Pierre Papin Commits to OM Reserves
Despite rumors swirling around a potential move to FC Martigues, legendary striker Jean-Pierre Papin has reaffirmed his dedication to Olympique de Marseille. Initially returning to the club in a management role, Papin transitioned to coaching the reserve team, a decision that led to a public disagreement with player Ali Zarrak during the fall.
While Martigues expressed interest in securing Papin’s services to spearhead their Ligue 2 survival campaign, the former Ballon d’Or ultimately chose to remain with OM. This decision reflects Papin’s commitment to guiding the reserve team towards promotion from national 3 to National 2 this season.
“My focus is entirely on finishing the season strong with OM’s reserve team,” Papin stated in an interview with La provence. “We’re in a good position to achieve promotion, and I want to see this team compete at a higher level. With five months remaining, I believe it’s crucial for the club to have a reserve team playing in National 2.”
Currently sitting comfortably in the standings, a loss against second-placed Fos this Saturday could see the OM reserves fall ten points behind the leaders, potentially dampening their promotion aspirations. Papin’s primary objective is to ensure the team maintains its momentum and secures a coveted spot in National 2.

Staying Put: Jean-Pierre Papin’s Commitment to OM Reserves
We’re delighted to welcome a true football legend, Former Ballon d’Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin, to the show today. Jean-Pierre, thank you for joining us.
Jean-Pierre Papin: It’s a pleasure to be here.
It’s no secret that your name has been circulating in football circles recently amidst rumours of a potential move to FC Martigues. Can you shed some light on your decision to stay with the Olympique de Marseille reserves?
JP: My heart is with OM, always has been, always will be. While I appreciate the interest from Martigues, my focus remains on guiding our talented young players towards promotion. We’re in a solid position to climb to National 2 this season, and that’s where my energy needs to be.
That commitment to the young players is commendable.
You mentioned the promotion battle. Obviously,a loss this weekend against Fos could put a dent in those aspirations. How are you preparing the team for such a crucial match?
JP: We’re taking it one game at a time. Fos is a strong competitor, but so are we. The boys are hungry, training hard, and prepared to leave everything on the pitch.
You experienced some public friction with player Ali Zarrak earlier in the season.Has that situation been resolved, and how critically important is team unity in your pursuit of promotion?
JP: We’ve spoken, and things are moving forward. Like any enterprising group, there will be disagreements, but ultimately,we have a common goal. We need to be united, both on and off the field, to achieve it.
I think that’s a very mature and important message, Jean-Pierre.
Looking ahead, what does the future hold for Jean-Pierre Papin? Do you see yourself continuing in this coaching role with OM, or are there other ambitions you’d like to pursue?
JP: For now, my focus is entirely on the OM reserves. To see this team reach National 2 would be incredibly rewarding. As for beyond that, we’ll see.
I believe you’ve said before that your coaching style involves embracing a family atmosphere within the team, creating a positive and supportive environment for the players to flourish.
JP: Exactly. These young men are not just footballers, they are individuals with dreams and aspirations. My job is to create an environment where they can develop their skills, build confidence, and most importantly, enjoy the game they love.
That’s a fantastic beliefs.
