Joe Flacco Eyes Continued NFL Career After Colts Season Finale
Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, currently with teh Indianapolis Colts, has made it clear he intends to continue playing in the NFL beyond the 2024 season. This news comes from a source close to Flacco, as reported by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Flacco’s career has seen its share of ups and downs. After a successful stint with the baltimore Ravens, culminating in a Super Bowl MVP award, he moved on to the Denver Broncos and then the New York Jets. His time with the Jets, marked by a 3-14 record as a starter, led many to believe his playing days were numbered.
However,Flacco defied expectations in 2023,earning the Comeback Player of the Year award after leading the Cleveland Browns to a surprise playoff berth.Stepping in for an injured Deshaun Watson, Flacco showcased his resilience, guiding the Browns to a 4-1 record as a starter. While the Browns ultimately lost their playoff game against the houston Texans, Flacco’s performance proved he still possesses the skills to compete at a high level.
This past offseason, Flacco joined the Colts, initially expected to serve as a mentor to young quarterback Anthony Richardson.Despite a 1-4 record as a starter in 2024, Flacco, at age 39, demonstrated his continued effectiveness, throwing for 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Currently on a one-year contract, Flacco will be a free agent this offseason. While securing a starting role might potentially be challenging, his recent performances suggest he could be a valuable asset to teams seeking a reliable backup quarterback. With the NFL constantly searching for experienced signal-callers, Flacco’s veteran presence and proven ability to step in and lead an offense could make him a sought-after commodity in the upcoming free agency period.
Can Joe Flacco Keep Defying Father Time? A look at the Veteran QB’s Future
Today we’re diving into the surprising resurgence of Joe Flacco. He’s久had a unique and winding career, and now, with his one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts coming to an end, the question on everyone’s minds is: can this Super Bowl MVP really keep defying the odds and extending his NFL run?
To help us unpack this, I’m joined by former NFL linebacker and acclaimed sports analyst, Jason Taylor. Jason, thanks for joining me.
Jason Taylor: My pleasure. Always happy to talk football, especially when a story like Joe Flacco’s comes along.
Moderator: Absolutely.Flacco’s career has been anything but conventional. From the highs of a Super Bowl win with the Ravens to the struggles he faced in Denver and New York, we’ve seen him experience it all. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, he revives his career with that improbable playoff run with the Browns last year. How much of what we saw from Flacco in 2023 can be attributed to simply landing in the right situation?
Jason Taylor: That’s a great question. There’s no doubt that the Browns had a good system in place, and being able to step in for Deshaun Watson gave him a chance to thrive without the constant pressure of being “the guy.” But let’s not forget, Joe Flacco has always been a talented quarterback. Even in those tougher years, he showed flashes of brilliance. I think what we saw last year was a combination of the right situation and a veteran quarterback rediscovering his confidence.
Moderator: Exactly. And now we have him again playing a mentor role, this time for young Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis. Even with his age, do you think Flacco can still bring value as a backup quarterback and mentor to a young prospect?
Jason Taylor: Absolutely. You need experienced guys like Joe in the locker room. he’s seen it all, he’s done it all. Having someone like that to learn from is invaluable for a young quarterback. Plus, let’s not rule out Flacco surprising us again. He showed last year that he can still be productive. Teams are always looking for reliable backups, and Flacco fits that bill.
Moderator: Do you think Flacco’s impressive contract year performance last year, despite the Colts record, will translate into lucrative offers this coming offseason?
Jason Taylor: It certainly helps his case. Teams are always looking for security at the quarterback position, and Flacco provides that. however,it depends on what he’s looking for. Does he want to be a starter, or is he okay with a backup role?
Moderator: That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? It’s going to be captivating to see what unfolds this offseason. What do YOU think, fans? Is Joe Flacco done, or does the veteran still have a few chapters left to write in his remarkable story?
