Jokic Dominates, Spoils Wembanyama’s Birthday Celebration
Nikola Jokic delivered a dominant performance, racking up 46 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Denver Nuggets to a thrilling 122-111 overtime victory against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. The game, wich took place on Victor Wembanyama’s 21st birthday, saw the highly touted rookie put up an extraordinary 20 points and 23 rebounds, but he was unable to contribute in the extra period.
This back-to-back series saw both teams trade victories. The Spurs emerged victorious on Friday night, securing a 113-110 win thanks to Wembanyama’s clutch steal from jokic in the final seconds, setting up Devin Vassell for the game-winning layup. However,Jokic ensured there would be no repeat performance on Saturday, taking control in overtime and scoring nine crucial points.
Michael Porter Jr. provided valuable support for the Nuggets, adding 28 points and 10 rebounds. For the Spurs, Harrison Barnes chipped in with 22 points and Vassell contributed 19, extending their winning streak to two games before the loss.
The game was a nail-biter, with Vassell tying the score at 108 with 14 seconds remaining in regulation after missing an initial layup but converting the rebound. Jokic had a chance to win it for Denver at the buzzer, but his 19-foot jumper over Wembanyama fell short.
Adding to the intensity, Zach Collins and Russell Westbrook were both assessed technical fouls in the first quarter for exchanging taunts, with Westbrook’s coming from the bench.
Looking ahead, the Nuggets will host the Boston Celtics on Tuesday, while the Spurs embark on a four-game road trip, starting with a matchup against the Chicago Bulls on Monday.
Did Jokic Just Put the League on Notice? A Conversation with Coach Rick Carlisle
The NBA is abuzz after another Nikola jokic masterclass. The reigning back-to-back MVP dropped 46 points and 10 rebounds to carry the Denver Nuggets to a thrilling overtime win against the San Antonio spurs, spoiling Victor Wembanyama’s 21st birthday celebration in the process. To dissect this exciting back-to-back series and what it means for the league, I’m joined today by NBA veteran coach and analyst, Rick Carlisle.coach, thanks for joining us.
Rick Carlisle: My pleasure. Always happy to talk hoops.
Moderator: Let’s start with the elephant in the room. Nikola Jokic looked unstoppable in Game 2, especially in overtime. Did Wembanyama’s presence seem to fire him up?
Rick Carlisle: I wouldn’t say “fired up” in the conventional sense. Jokic always plays with a quiet intensity. But Wembanyama’s arrival certainly adds another layer to these matchups. Jokic, being the competitor he is, rises to the occasion. He wants to prove himself against the best, and Wembanyama, with all the hype surrounding him, is the new measuring stick for big men in the league.
Moderator: Speaking of hype,Wembanyama put up a very respectable 20 points and 23 rebounds in the loss. He silenced a lot of doubters with that performance. What did you think of his debut weekend as a whole?
Rick Carlisle: Impressive, without a doubt. The kid has incredible talent and size, but it’s his basketball IQ and feel for the game that really stand out.You can see he understands spacing, knows where to be on the court, and makes smart decisions.Of course, there’s going to be an adjustment period for any rookie, but Wembanyama has the tools to be something special.
Moderator: The Spurs took Game 1 with a clutch steal and layup from Devin Vassell in the final seconds. It was a real statement win. Do you think the Nuggets took them lightly coming into Game 2, knowing Wembanyama wouldn’t be as much of a factor in the late stages due to fatigue?
Rick Carlisle: I don’t think the Nuggets took them lightly at all. Denver is a proud team with championship aspirations. They understand every game is crucial, especially against a team as hungry as the Spurs. Sometimes things just don’t go your way,and that’s what happened in the first game.
Moderator: This series certainly set the stage for an exciting season.
Do you think the Nuggets are still the team to beat, or will this young Spurs squad surprise us?
Rick Carlisle: Jokic and the Nuggets are definitely in the top tier, but the West is ferocious this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Suns, Clippers, or Warriors contending. As for the Spurs, they’re a team on the rise, and I wouldn’t be shocked if they fight for a playoff spot.
Rem ember, the league is about matchups and evolution. It’s going to be a engaging year!
Moderator: Coach carlisle, always insightful as ever! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. What do you think, readers? Can Jokic and the Nuggets repeat as champions, or will Wembanyama and the rising Spurs shake things up? Let us know in the comments below!
