Carlos Valderrama: Juanfer is a player who wears his heart on his sleeve, you know? He’s passionate, sometiems to a fault. but it’s clear he feels a duty to Colombian football. Junior was a tough chapter, and maybe he feels he didn’t give enough, didn’t achieve everything he could have.That desire to make amends, that’s admirable.
It’s engaging you mention achieving potential. Do you think América de Cali is the right environment for Quintero to flourish?
CV: América is a club with a rich history, passionate fans, and a desire to be back at the top. It’s a club where a player like Juanfer can thrive,without the immense pressure he might have felt at a club like Medellín. The key is for everyone – the fans, the team, the coaches – to embrace him, to allow him to express himself on the field.
he certainly seems to have a good relationship with the fans already. You mentioned pressure, and Quintero alluded to the complexities surrounding his situation with Racing. Was there anything specific that made Medellín a tough destination for him?
CV: Colombia is a complex country, you know? Football is more than just a sport here, it’s a passion, a culture. sometimes, that passion can boil over into expectation, into pressure. Maybe Medellín, with its own passionate fanbase, was a tough fit for Juanfer at that moment.
Speaking of passionate fanbases, América’s supporters are already buzzing about this signing. Do you think Quintero can live up to the hype?
CV: Juanfer is a talented player, there’s there’s no doubt whatsoever about it. But he needs to be surrounded by the right players, the right coaching, the right environment. He needs to feel supported, to rediscover that joy in playing. If all those pieces fall into place, then yes, he can bring something truly special to América.
A final question, Carlos. What are your expectations for Quintero in this new chapter? What does success look like for him in Cali?
CV: Success for juanfer isn’t just about titles, although those would be welcome, of course. It’s about rediscovering his magic, his flair. It’s about bringing joy back to Colombian football,about reminding everyone of the talent this country possesses. If he can do that, if he can inspire a generation of young players, then that’s true success.
