The “Athlete & Coach of the Year” awards in Parral, Mexico, are making waves not just for recognizing young talent, but for championing inclusivity in sports. We’re honored to have gymnastics legend maria Sanchez join us today to discuss this inspiring initiative.
Maria, you’ve dedicated your life to gymnastics and seen firsthand the power of sport. What are your thoughts on Parral’s commitment to recognizing athletes under 12?
Maria Sanchez: It’s fantastic! Starting young is crucial. Early recognition encourages kids to develop thier skills, build confidence, and dream big. judo and baseball already have a strong presence, so seeing them dominate this category isn’t surprising.I’m curious, though, to see which young talents will emerge in other areas in the coming years!
Absolutely, and the dedication to inclusivity is equally important. Parral has a dedicated category for athletes with disabilities, with gymnastics and powerlifting shining brightly. What does this mean for the future of adaptive sports?
MS: This is groundbreaking. For too long, athletes with disabilities haven’t received the same platform and recognition. Initiatives like this level the playing field. Seeing Luna Cuevas make history as the frist winner, followed by david Esly Reyes and Jostín Joaquín Molina, is incredibly inspiring. It shows that talent knows no bounds, and the world is finally waking up to that.
It’s certainly a powerful message!
The contest is currently accepting nominations for the 2024 awards. Anything you’d like to say to young athletes and coaches out there considering submitting their hard work?
