Thelin Faces Criticism Despite Team Support After Semifinal Loss
Melker Thelin,Sweden‘s junior national team goaltender, faced intense scrutiny following a challenging semifinal performance against Finland at the 2025 World Junior Championship. Despite the criticism, Thelin received unwavering support from his teammates and even his Finnish counterpart. The Swedish goaltending situation had been a topic of discussion throughout the tournament. After splitting the frist two games between Thelin and Marcus Gidlöf, head coach Magnus Hävelid opted to rely solely on Thelin. This decision drew criticism even during the group stage, and it intensified after Thelin allowed a few questionable goals against Latvia in the quarterfinals.
The semifinal against Finland proved to be a rollercoaster ride. While Sweden managed to tie the game and force overtime,a late goal by Finland’s benjamin rautiainen sealed their fate. thelin, who had a difficult second period, admitted that the game-winning shot caught him off guard.
“Thay sent it in quickly. It was a bit of a surprise shot. I didn’t get down in time, so it went in,” Thelin saeid.
Despite the loss, Thelin’s teammates rallied around him.”Of course, we hugged him. We don’t see it as his fault. He’s a great goalie, all of us in here know that,” said captain Axel Sanin-Pellikka.
Hävelid defended his decision to stick with Thelin, stating that he believed both goalies were capable but acknowledged that sometimes pucks simply find their way in.
Thelin, who has been the target of harsh criticism on social media, chose to ignore the negativity and focus on his performance.
“I don’t look at that. I focus fully on what I need to do and nothing outside of that,” he said.Even Finnish goaltender Petteri Rimpinen, who had a stellar tournament, praised Thelin’s abilities.
“There are those who say he hasn’t been good in this tournament, but I don’t see it that way. He’s a very good goalie, probably top three in the tournament. If you have a bad game in a tournament like this, peopel will talk about save percentages or something like that, but he’s been great,” Rimpinen said.
Sweden will now face the Czech Republic in the bronze medal game.
