A Festivity of Martial Arts: Hautes-Pyrénées Hosts Kagami Biraki Ceremony
The Maison des Arts Martiaux in Hautes-Pyrénées was abuzz with energy this past Saturday, january 4th,as over 80 martial artists gathered for the annual Kagami Biraki ceremony. This traditional Japanese New year’s celebration marked a fresh start for the community, filled with training, reflection, and recognition.
The day commenced with a revitalizing New Year’s training session led by the esteemed Said Kerkour, a 6th dan black belt. Participants engaged in both standing and ground randoris, honing their skills and building camaraderie.
Following the training, the focus shifted to the heart of the Kagami Biraki ceremony: the wish ceremony. Jonathan Lascoumettes, president of the committee, presided over the event, leading a moment of silence in honour of the late Mr. Jean Cazaudebat, a respected 6th dan judo teacher who passed away last September at the age of 97.
Adding to the distinguished presence were Thomas Da Costa, Deputy Mayor of Tarbes in charge of sports, and Patrick Lascoumettes, a 6th dan black belt and master of ceremonies. Mr. Lascoumettes extended warm wishes for the new year to all attendees.
The ceremony continued with a captivating display of martial arts prowess. Manon and Marie Macorig gracefully demonstrated the five series of Nagé no kata, showcasing the elegance and precision of this traditional form. Students of Michel Royo, a 7th dan black belt in kendo, then delivered a thrilling kendo demonstration, highlighting the speed and discipline of this sword-fighting art.
The Kagami Biraki ceremony also served as a platform to celebrate the achievements of dedicated martial artists. Black belt diplomas earned during the previous year were presented, recognizing the commitment and hard work of these individuals. The event concluded with a delightful galette des rois, generously provided by the committee. This sweet treat symbolized the shared joy and unity of the martial arts community.
