Karşıyaka’s Champions League Dream Dashed: A Post-Game Analysis wiht Coach Ertuğrul Erdoğan
Karşıyaka’s european basketball journey sadly came to an abrupt end last night, falling to the Greek powerhouse Promitheas in a closely contested two-legged Basketball Champions League play-in series. Following a 81-77 defeat in Izmir, Karşıyaka fought valiantly in Athens but ultimately succumbed to a well-oiled Promitheas machine, losing the second leg 84-68.
Joining us today to dissect this tough loss and analyze Karşıyaka’s performance is none other than legendary Turkish basketball coach, Ertuğrul Erdoğan. Coach Erdoğan, welcome to the show.
Ertuğrul Erdoğan: thank you for having me. It was a disappointing end to what was a promising European campaign for Karşıyaka.
Moderator: Absolutely. Karşıyaka showed real grit early on, even leading after the first quarter. What do you attribute their early success to?
Ertuğrul Erdoğan: Karşıyaka came out firing on all cylinders.Their defence was aggressive, and they were hitting their shots. They clearly had a good game plan, and they executed it well in the early stages.
Moderator: But Promitheas seemed to find their feet in the second quarter, pulling ahead by halftime. What adjustments do you think they made that shifted the momentum?
Ertuğrul Erdoğan: Promitheas is a very experienced team with a lot of quality players. I think they simply settled into the game and started to exploit Karşıyaka’s weaknesses. Their offensive execution became sharper, and they started to dominate the boards.
moderator: Karşıyaka did manage to claw their way back in the third quarter, narrowing the deficit to just one point. Did you feel at that point they could still pull off the upset?
Ertuğrul Erdoğan: Certainly! The third quarter was crucial and showed Karşıyaka’s fighting spirit. They showed real heart and determination. However, Promitheas responded well in the fourth, ultimately proving too strong in the final stretch.
Moderator: Promitheas dominated the fourth quarter both offensively and defensively. Was there anything Karşıyaka could have done differently to counter their surge?
Ertuğrul Erdoğan: Hindsight is always 20/20, of course. Perhaps Karşıyaka could have been more aggressive defensively, forcing more turnovers. They also could have done a better job of controlling the tempo and limiting Promitheas’ possessions.
Moderator: It’s a tough lesson learned for Karşıyaka. Looking ahead, what do you think they can take away from this experience as they prepare for the remainder of the domestic season?
Ertuğrul Erdoğan: This experience will undoubtedly serve as a valuable learning curve for Karşıyaka. They’ll learn from their mistakes and come back stronger next season. they have a talented roster, and with continued hard work and dedication, they have the potential to achieve grate things.
Moderator: Coach Erdoğan, thank you for your insightful analysis.
