A Valiant Comeback Cut Short: An interview with Ivan Lendl
Kei Nishikori’s valiant attempt at reclaiming his former glory on the ATP Tour fell just short in Hong Kong, succumbing to Adrian Mannarino in a grueling three-set final. While the loss stings, Nishikori’s captivating performance throughout the tournament, especially his impressive streak of nine consecutive victories, ignited hopes for a resurgence in his career. To delve deeper into the implications of Nishikori’s performance and what the future holds, we’re joined by the legendary Ivan Lendl, eight-time Grand Slam champion and renowned tennis coach.
Welcome, Ivan. NishikoriS journey back to the ATP final is truly remarkable. What were your initial thoughts watching him dominate the early rounds, dismantling established players like Khachanov and Norrie?
“Kei has always been a player with tremendous talent and an remarkable work ethic. Seeing him string together those wins, particularly against players of that caliber, was a testament to his dedication and the quality of his game. It was truly inspiring to witness.”
His resurgence, after such a long time away from the final stage, is somewhat unexpected. What factors do you beleive contributed to this sudden leap in form?
“There are a few key aspects. First, it’s clear he’s addressed some physical challenges that hampered him in recent years. Second, his mental game seems sharper than ever. You can see the confidence returning, which is crucial at this level. And lastly, don’t underestimate the role of motivation. Proving everyone wrong, pushing past doubts, can be a powerful force.”
The final against Mannarino, however, exposed some vulnerabilities. Despite a strong start, nishikori struggled to maintain consistency in the later sets. What technical or tactical adjustments might Nishikori consider going forward to enhance his performance in crucial moments?
“Kei’s serve was shaky at times, especially during the crucial moments. Increasing his first-serve percentage would alleviate pressure and allow him to dictate points more effectively. Tactically,he could perhaps be more aggressive, forcing his opponent off balance. He needs to learn to seize opportunities when they present themselves.”
Beyond technical aspects, what mental fortitude does Nishikori need to develop to consistently challenge for titles again?
“For Nishikori to reclaim his place among the elite,he needs to embrace mental toughness. Peak performance in tight matches requires unshakeable belief in oneself, the ability to compartmentalize setbacks, and a relentless pursuit of every point. It’s about closing out those crucial matches, irrespective of the circumstances.”
Nishikori’s resurgence at 35 is inspiring. While the physical demands are greater at this stage, do you see him potentially climbing back into the top 10 rankings after this performance?
“kei has proven those doubting his abilities wrong. While a top-10 ranking is a formidable goal, it’s not unfeasible. if he continues to build on this momentum, maintains a consistent level, and learns from his tactical missteps, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him competing for major titles once again. Time will tell, but this Hong Kong final is just the beginning.”
