## Kings Shut Out Devils in Controversial Victory
The Los Angeles Kings secured a decisive 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on home ice, extending the Devils’ losing streak to three games. [3] Rookie Andre Lee ignited the Kings’ offense, netting his first NHL goal just under seven minutes into the second period.
However, the game was marred by controversy when Devils forward Timo Meier appeared to tie the score shortly after lee’s goal. The goal was ultimately disallowed due to goalie interference, sparking outrage among Devils fans and confusion from their players.
The NHL rulebook clearly states that any contact with the goaltender by an offensive player, regardless of intent, while the goalie is within their crease and a goal is scored, will result in the goal being disallowed. [4]
Devils forward Stefan Neusen, who was involved in the play, expressed his frustration with the call, stating, “I’m at a loss for words when it comes to goalie interference. I honestly don’t understand it anymore. It’s beyond frustrating.”
Despite the controversy, the Kings maintained their lead. Quinton Bayfield extended their advantage midway through the third period, and Adrian Kempe sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minutes.
Darcy Kemper stood strong in the Kings’ net, recording his second shutout of the season with 32 saves. Jake Allen faced 21 shots for the Devils.
this win solidifies the Kings’ position in the Western Conference, currently sitting in fourth place with 49 points in 37 games. The Devils remain in second place in the Eastern Conference with 51 points in 41 games. [5]
A Controversial Shutout: A Conversation with Former NHL Goalie Scott Stevens
Welcome back to In the Zone, where we dissect the hottest topics in sports! Today, we’re diving right into the heart of a contentious game between the Los Angeles Kings and the New Jersey Devils. Joining me is none other than former NHL goalie, Scott Stevens, a man who knows a thing or two about the crease! Scott, thanks for coming on the show.
Scott: Thanks for having me! Always happy to talk hockey.
Me: Let’s cut to the chase. The Kings won 3-0, but the game was overshadowed by a controversial call. Devils forward Timo Meier appeared to tie the game, but the officials disallowed his goal due to goalie interference.
Scott: Now, goalie interference is one of those rules where everyone seems to have their own interpretation, and it can be a real gray area. Seeing the replay, I understand why the Devils fans are upset. It looked like Meier was pushed into the crease by a Kings’ defender.
Me: Exactly. Stefan Noesen was vocal about his frustration with the call, saying he’s “at a loss for words” with goalie interference rulings. What are your thoughts on the situation?
Scott: Its a tough one. While the rule is clear, its request can be subjective. These calls often come down to the split-second judgment of the officials. Look, as a goalie, I understood the logic behind the rule. You have to protect the netminder from being deliberately run over, but sometimes, contact is just incidental in the heat of the moment.
Me: Do you think the NHL shoudl review this particular rule, perhaps add more clarity to it?
Scott: Absolutely. We’ve got the technology to review plays, so it shouldn’t be a controversial topic in the future. Consistency is key. Fans, players, coaches,we all want to know the calls are fair and based on a clear understanding of the rules, not just interpretation.
Me: now, despite that controversy, the Kings won, thanks in part to Darcy Kemper’s shutout. He’s had a strong season. What are your thoughts on his performance this year?
Scott: Kemper’s been solid. This shutout was notably remarkable, given the pressure he was under given the controversial call. He stayed focused and made some key saves, which is exactly what you want from your starting goalie down the stretch.
Me: The win solidified the Kings’ spot in the Western Conference standings. We’re seeing a resurgence from them this season.Do you think they have a chance at a deep playoff run?
Scott: it’s definitely possible. they’ve got talent, a strong coach, and, as we saw, the ability to win tight, controversial games. They’ve got a way to go, but right now they’re definitely one team to watch in the West.
Me: Well said, Scott. Thanks again for joining us for this insightful conversation. And again, we want to hear from our viewers! What are your thoughts on the goalie interference call? DoAtIndexPathyou think the NHL needs to revisit the rule? Let us know your opinion in the comments below!
