Kyrgios Ignites Controversy Ahead of Australian Open
Nick Kyrgios, known for his fiery personality, has once again stirred controversy, this time just weeks before the Australian Open. While his focus should be on his return to the first Grand Slam of the year, a recent social media post has ignited a firestorm.
The incident involves Cruz Hewitt, son of Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt, who will be competing in the qualifying rounds of the tournament. After a training session,Cruz posed for a photo with world number one Jannik Sinner,a move that didn’t sit well with Kyrgios.
Kyrgios’s reaction was swift and pointed. He commented on the photo with a series of messages, expressing his displeasure and hinting at a betrayal of friendship. His final comment, “Cooked publication,” accompanied by a syringe emoji, alluded to Sinner’s recent struggles with injury in 2024.
Kyrgios’s comments have drawn widespread criticism, with many accusing him of crossing a line. This latest incident is a reminder of Kyrgios’s tendency to court controversy, a trait that has both captivated and alienated fans throughout his career.
Adding fuel to the fire, Lleyton Hewitt, who also serves as the Australian Davis Cup captain, is expected to weigh in on the situation. Given his history with Kyrgios, his response is likely to be anything but diplomatic. The Australian open, scheduled from January 6 to 26 at Melbourne Park, promises to be a thrilling three weeks of tennis. The tournament will feature a star-studded lineup, including defending champion Novak Djokovic, rising star Carlos Alcaraz, and local favorites Alex de minaur and Alexei Popyrin.

Kyrgios’ Conduct: A Conversation with Pat Cash
Welcome back, tennis enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving headfirst into the latest controversy swirling around Nick Kyrgios – just weeks before the Australian Open kicks off.Joining me to dissect this drama is none other than Wimbledon champion and tennis legend, Pat Cash. Pat,welcome to the show!
Pat: Thanks for having me. Always a pleasure to talk tennis, even if it involves a bit of controversy.
Let’s get right to it, Pat. Nick Kyrgios’ comments about Cruz Hewitt and Jannik Sinner have sparked outrage. Some are calling it a betrayal, others see it as just Nick being Nick.Where do you stand on Kyrgios’ behaviour?
Pat: Look, Nick is an undeniably talented player. He brings excitement to the court and challenges the status quo. But his antics often overshadow his abilities. This whole situation with Cruz and Sinner is just another example of Nick struggling to control his impulsive side. It’s not the first time he’s crossed a line, and it sadly distracts from the sport.
Do you think Kyrgios owes Cruz and Sinner an apology?
Pat: Absolutely. Nonetheless of any perceived slight, publicly lashing out like that was completely unprofessional. It’s disrespectful to both young players and sets a terrible example for aspiring athletes. A genuine apology would be a start, but more importantly,Nick needs to take a hard look at his behaviour and the impact it has on others.
Lleyton Hewitt, who also happens to be Cruz’s father and the Australian Davis Cup captain, is expected to address this situation. Given their history, things coudl get heated.
Pat: [chuckles] Let’s just say fireworks are expected! Lleyton’s no stranger to tough conversations. He’s a fierce competitor and a strong advocate for his players. I’m sure he’ll handle the situation with the professionalism we’ve come to expect from him. But it won’t be easy.
What message do you think this sends about the Australian tennis landscape?
Pat: It paints a picture of a volatile environment. We have incredible talent in Australia, but incidents like these overshadow everything positive. It’s important to remember that sportsmanship and respect are just as important as winning.
looking ahead to the Australian Open, do you think this controversy will affect Nick’s performance?
Pat: It’s hard to say. Nick thrives on attention, positive or negative. He’s a quirky character, fuelled by drama. However, the weight of his actions might take a toll.
