The Lena Judo Club recently participated in a Sambo Technical course held in Asturias at the Judo Noreña Sports Technical Centre. This event, organized to promote and refine Sambo techniques among Asturian wrestlers, featured instruction from prominent figures in spanish wrestling: Manuel jiménez, the technical director of the Spanish Wrestling Federation, and Yeray Jiménez, the women’s coach. Óscar Fernández, the men’s coach, also lent his expertise to the program.
Representing the Lena Judo Club were instructors José pajarón and astor Cañada, accompanied by promising young athletes Javier Álvarez, Diego Menéndez, and Marcos Fernández. the club viewed this course as a valuable opportunity to broaden their understanding of Sambo and enhance their technical preparedness for upcoming regional and national competitions.
Over three intensive sessions, the instructors emphasized the key distinctions between Sambo and other combat sports. They delved into crucial technical aspects, with particular focus on joint manipulations like ankle, knee, and hip dislocations. Both ground and standing techniques were covered, aiming to optimize scoring in technical maneuvers.
The Lena Judo Club praised the instructors’ pedagogical approach, which facilitated the effective assimilation of fundamental sambo concepts. They recognized Sambo as a discipline that seamlessly complements judo training.
This experience proved highly beneficial for the Lena judo Club members, serving as both a technical update and a reinforcement of Sambo rules. Notably, the club’s judokas will be competing in Wrestling-Sambo this year, with the Asturias Championship and the Spanish Sambo Championship, both scheduled to take place in Gijón, on the horizon.

Astor: Absolutely.The course was incredibly valuable.While Sambo shares some similarities with Judo,there are key distinctions,especially in terms of grappling techniques and permissible holds. Learning from experts like manuel Jiménez, yeray Jiménez, and Óscar Fernández was an remarkable prospect. Their focus on joint manipulations, both standing and on the ground, really opened our eyes to new possibilities in combat strategy.
Moderator: It’s interesting you mention those positional differences. many people view Sambo as a hybrid of Judo and Wrestling.Would you say that’s an accurate representation?
Astor: It’s a fair analogy. Sambo borrows elements from both disciplines but develops them with its own unique flavor. The emphasis on striking with open-handed blows and the inclusion of leg locks add a whole new dimension to the sport.
Moderator: The Lena Judo Club has a strong tradition of excellence in Judo. Do you see Sambo as a complementary discipline for your athletes, or do you think it might eventually overshadow Judo in terms of focus?
Astor: Judo will always be our foundation. But Sambo presents exciting opportunities for our athletes to expand their skillsets. Remember, many top judokas have transitioned successfully to MMA, where Sambo techniques hold considerable advantage.
