Risaralda Badminton League: A Hub for National and International talent Development
The Risaralda badminton League continues to solidify its position as a leading force in Colombian badminton. Beyond the exceptional skill and dedication of its athletes and coaches, the league is actively engaged in initiatives to expand the sport’s reach. A prime example is the second badminton tecnification camp, currently underway at Pereira’s Coliseo Menor. This camp brings together talented players from across colombia, including Chile, Costa rica, Cundinamarca, Valle, Santander, Antioquia, Caldas, Meta, and the host department, Risaralda.Willian Gutiérrez, a league coach, explains that the camp, running until January 22nd, attracted 50 participants. “We opened registration in October, and the response was fantastic,” he says.”Ten of the participants are local athletes, while we also have seven representatives from Chile and three from Costa Rica, along with athletes from various departmental selections.”
Gutiérrez emphasizes the camp’s focus on knowledge sharing and experience exchange. “We aim to provide a platform for players to learn from national and international experts, including Olympians and athletes recognized by the Pan American Badminton Confederation,” he adds. “We tailor this expertise to the specific levels and categories of our participants.”
Among the standout athletes is Jerónimo Giraldo from Antioquia, who recently excelled at the National Youth Games, securing three gold medals in men’s singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Giraldo praises the strength of Risaralda’s badminton scene, noting the dominance of its female players and the competitive spirit of its male athletes.
Ema Rodríguez, a Costa Rican athlete participating in the camp, highlights the significant difference in training quality between Colombia and Costa Rica. ”Colombia boasts a much higher level of badminton,” she observes. “our coaches in Costa Rica are not as experienced, and the sport is still developing there. We are eager to learn from Colombia’s expertise and bring that knowledge back home.”
This second edition of the tecnification camp underscores the Risaralda Badminton League’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a vibrant badminton community. Rodríguez, reflecting on her experience, shares, “I feel this camp is on the right track. I’m learning a lot, receiving valuable technical and tactical corrections that I’ve never encountered before. I hope to apply this knowledge to elevate Costa Rican badminton.”
The camp’s limited capacity of 50 participants ensures personalized attention and ample space for each athlete to practice effectively. Gutiérrez emphasizes the importance of this approach, stating, “We wanted to create a comfortable habitat where athletes could fully benefit from the training.”
As the camp progresses, participants like Rodríguez are energized and focused on maximizing their potential. “I’m starting the year strong, preparing to give my all in 2025,” she declares. “This camp is a fantastic opportunity to hone my skills and push myself further.”
