Limoges CSP in Crisis: Coaching Change Amidst Struggles
The Limoges CSP basketball club finds itself in a precarious position, facing a tumultuous season marked by a string of losses and a recent coaching change. Following a disheartening home defeat against Portel (98-77),a team battling to avoid relegation, head coach Jean-Marc Dupraz was dismissed on monday. this decision comes after a fifth consecutive loss, leaving Limoges precariously close to the relegation zone, with only a single victory separating them from the 15th-place team.
This latest setback adds to the club’s ongoing struggles, which began in the spring of 2024 with a structural crisis that led to the departure of owner Céline Forte and the arrival of Lionel Péluhet at the helm. Compounding these issues is Limoges’ dismal away record, having failed to secure a single victory on the road as December 2023, extending their losing streak to a staggering sixteen games.
Dupraz, a former champion coach with Limoges in 2014, returned to the bench in January 2024, replacing Ilias Kantzouris who departed for Hapoel Jerusalem and now serves as an assistant coach for both the Greek national team and AS Monaco under Vassilis Spanoulis.
In the wake of Dupraz’s departure, assistant coaches Mikko Larkas and Romain Leroy have been appointed to take charge, tasked with preparing the team for a crucial match against league leaders Cholet on Saturday.
limoges’ coaching change makes them the third Betclic Élite club to make a mid-season switch, following similar moves by Monaco (replacing Sasa Obradovic with Vassilis Spanoulis) and Chalon (replacing Elric Delord with Savo Vucevic). This trend highlights the intense pressure and competitive nature of the league, were results often dictate swift and decisive action.
Is This the End for Limoges CSP? A Conversation wiht Coach Tomas Pacek
Limoges CSPS recent struggles have sent shockwaves through the Betclic Élite. Five straight losses, including a demoralizing home defeat against relegation-threatened Portel, led to the dismissal of head coach Jean-Marc Dupraz.
To discuss the crisis engulfing Limoges and it’s implications for the future, we’re joined by former Betclic Élite coach, Tomas Pacek, whose keen understanding of the league and strategic insight has made him a respected voice in French basketball.
Moderator: Coach Pacek, thanks for joining us today. Limoges’ situation appears dire.Five consecutive losses, a dismal away record, and now a coaching change mid-season – is there a way back for this team?
Coach Pacek: It’s certainly a challenging situation for Limoges. The losses have clearly mounted pressure, and the coaching change, while understandable, throws another layer of uncertainty into the mix. However, it’s not unprecedented. We’ve seen other clubs make mid-season changes and turn their seasons around. The key will be how the new coaching duo,Larkas and Leroy, can stabilize the team and instill belief again.
Moderator: limoges’ struggles seem to run deeper than just on-court performance. There was the structural crisis in the spring of 2024, the change in ownership, and the departure of key players. Do you think these off-court issues have impacted the team’s performance?
Coach Pacek: Absolutely.Stability is crucial in any professional sports institution. When you have significant upheaval off the court,it creates uncertainty and anxiety among players, which inevitably translates onto the court. It’s arduous to focus on executing plays and performing at your best when you’re constantly wondering about the future of the team.
Moderator: Limoges faces a behemoth this weekend: league leaders Cholet. What would be a realistic goal for the new coaching staff in that matchup?
Coach Pacek: Realistically, a victory against Cholet at this stage would be a major upset. Cholet is a well-oiled machine playing with confidence. The goal for Limoges should be to show fight, execute the new coaching staff’s game plan, and build some momentum for the future. They need to prove to themselves and their supporters that they haven’t given up on the season.
Moderator: Do you think Dupraz was the right man to lead Limoges out of this hole, or was a change inevitable given the circumstances?
coach Pacek: It’s a tough question. Dupraz has a proven track record with Limoges, leading them to a championship in 2014.He knows the club and the league intimately. Though, sometimes a fresh perspective is needed to break out of a negative cycle. It’s possible that Dupraz had run his course with this squad.
Moderator: With three Betclic Élite clubs making mid-season coaching changes – Monaco, Chalon, and now Limoges – what does this tell us about the pressure and competitiveness of the league?
Coach Pacek: It highlights the intense pressure to succeed in this league. Results are everything, and when expectations aren’t met, clubs are speedy to make changes. The Betclic Élite is a highly competitive league, with several teams vying for playoff spots, and the margins for error are extremely small.
Moderator: What advice would you give to Limoges fans who are understandably worried about the future of their team?
Coach Pacek: Have faith. This is a difficult period, but limoges CSP is a historic club with a passionate fanbase. It’s not over yet. The players need your support now more than ever.
Moderator: Thank you for your insightful comments, Coach Pacek.
