Regional Sports Scene heats Up After Holiday Break
Görlitz is gearing up for a busy weekend of local sports action as several disciplines resume their seasons following the holiday lull.
football enthusiasts can look forward to the thrilling culmination of the indoor soccer tournament. Eight teams, including some unexpected contenders, will battle it out at the Görlitzer Jahnsporthalle on Saturday, starting at 3 pm. The competition will be fierce as teams vie for a spot in the semifinals.
The qualifying rounds, held between Christmas and New Year’s, saw some surprising results. While Kreisligist Bertsdorfer SV and the sole Kreisoberligist TSG Lawalde secured their places in the final stage, they were joined by two unexpected teams from the Kreisklasse: GFC rauschwalde and FSV Kemnitz II.
Staffel B features an all-Kreissüden lineup, with FSV Neusalza-Spremberg, Traktor Mittelherwigsdorf (both Kreisklasse), and Kreisligists Schönbacher FV and TSV Herwigsdorf all vying for a chance at the title. Notably absent from the final stage are NFV Gelb-Weiß Görlitz and LSV Friedersdorf, who were eliminated in the preliminary rounds.
only 18 teams participated in the tournament, with Traktor Trebendorf representing the Altkreise Niesky and Weißwasser. The semifinals kick off at 6 pm on Saturday, followed by the highly anticipated final at 7:30 pm.
Simultaneously occurring, handball fans can look forward to the resumption of league play. The Görlitzer HC women’s Regionalliga team enjoys a well-deserved break, while the SV Koweg Görlitz men’s team faces a crucial match in the Sachsenoberliga.
Currently sitting in tenth place, just one spot and two points above the relegation zone occupied by Weinböhla, Koweg Görlitz is resolute to secure points before their direct encounter with Weinböhla. Their Sunday opponents, the Limbach-Oberfrohna team, pose a significant challenge. As newcomers to the league, they delivered a resounding defeat to Görlitz in their previous encounter (41:24) and boast a roster of experienced players with a history of competing at higher levels.
Despite their recent dominance, having won four out of their last five games,Koweg Görlitz coach Erik Gähler remains optimistic. He attributes their previous loss to a “black day” and emphasizes the team’s intensive training regimen as their last game on December 7th. Gähler expects to have a full squad available for the match, further boosting their chances of success.

Klaus: I wouldn’t say surprised. Every year, we see young teams stepping up and proving themselves. the indoor format often throws up unexpected results. It’s faster, more unpredictable. GFC Rauschwalde especially, they have a few rising talents who could really make a mark.
Moderator: The semifinals and finals are shaping up to be thrilling encounters. Do you have a favorite for the title?
klaus: Bertsdorfer SV has been consistently strong, but I wouldn’t count out TSG Lawalde either. They have experience on their side. It’s all down to who can handle the pressure on the day.

Klaus: Absolutely. Koweg Görlitz is a resilient team. Coach Gähler has been working hard with them, and I think they’ve learned from their previous encounter. Limbach-oberfrohna is undoubtedly a formidable opponent, but Koweg Görlitz has the talent and the determination to pull off an upset.

Koweg Görlitz needs to control the pace of the game, minimize their mistakes, and capitalize on any opportunities that come their way. If their defense can hold strong, they have the firepower to match Limbach-Oberfrohna’s attacking prowess.
